Schalke seek to restore pride in Madrid
Real Madrid CF were 6-1 winners in the first leg at FC Schalke 04 and the German side will need to improve on their recent run against Spanish clubs for a second-leg success.
Having reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in each of the last three seasons, Real Madrid CF will look to continue their progress as FC Schalke 04 visit in the round of 16 second leg.
• Madrid – in the round of 16 for the 11th successive season – were the competition's leading scorers in the group stage with 20 goals. Cristiano Ronaldo contributed nine, a group stage record.
• The German side, who ensured their qualifying place with a matchday six victory, are in the knockout rounds for the second successive season – the first time they have managed that feat.
• Schalke, however, look certain to progress no further after Madrid continued their scoring spree in the first leg, Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema all scoring twice in a 6-1 success.
Previous meetings
• Madrid have lost only twice on the 25 occasions they have hosted German visitors in the Spanish capital, with 19 wins and four draws. Last season they recorded a 2-0 win against Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals but it was not enough to wipe out a 4-1 first-leg defeat.
• Since FC Bayern München's 1-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu in the 2000/01 semi-final – the German club went on to win 3-1 on aggregate – Madrid have won seven and drawn two of their nine games at home to German sides.
• Bayern also won 4-2 at the Bernabéu in the 1999/2000 second group stage and are the only Bundesliga team to have prevailed at the ground. In the 2011/12 semi-final Madrid beat Bayern 2-1 in the home second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final but lost the penalty shoot-out that followed.
• Madrid have defeated three German sides in European finals, beating Eintracht Frankfurt 7-3 in the 1960 European Cup and Leverkusen 2-1 in the 2002 UEFA Champions League, both in Glasgow; they also overcame 1. FC Köln 5-3 on aggregate in the 1986 UEFA Cup.
• Madrid's record in two-legged ties with German clubs in UEFA competition is W11 L8.
• The first-leg reverse means Schalke have won only two of their last 14 encounters against Spanish opponents, suffering seven defeats. In 12 away games against Liga clubs their record is W2 D5 L5; they have not won in their last seven games, since a 3-0 victory at RCD Espanyol in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup round of 32.
• The Royal Blues have twice faced Spanish teams in knockout ties in the last four years, beating Valencia CF 3-1 at home after a 1-1 draw away in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League round of 16 en route to the semi-finals. In the 2011/12 UEFA Cup quarter-finals, Schalke lost 4-2 at home to Athletic Club and then drew 2-2 away.
• Madrid have lost only one of the 28 UEFA competition ties in which they have won the first leg away from home. The sole exception came against Odense BK in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup third round when a 3-2 away success preceded a 2-0 home reverse.
• Schalke have lost all three ties in which they went down at home in the first leg, and avoided defeat in only one of those second legs – the most recent, that 2-2 draw at Athletic Club in 2011/12.

• Ronaldo set the tone for Group B with a matchday one hat-trick as Madrid won 6-1 at Galatasaray AŞ. The Spanish club won all three home games, beating FC København 4-0, Juventus 2-1 and Galatasaray 4-1.
• In Group E Schalke won 1-0 at FC Basel 1893 but then lost 3-0 away to Chelsea FC and shared a goalless draw with FC Steaua Bucureşti.
• Madrid have won 13 – including the last five – and drawn two of their 15 UEFA Champions League home games since a 2-0 defeat by FC Barcelona in the 2010/11 semi-finals. Schalke have lost just two of their last 14 European away fixtures.

Team ties
• Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who struck a spectacular first-leg consolation for Schalke, scored eight goals in 20 Liga games for Madrid in 2009.
• Raúl González, the UEFA Champions League's all-time top scorer with 71 goals and a three-time winner of the competition, scored five of those goals in a two-year spell with Schalke after transferring from Madrid in 2010. He had spent 16 years with the Spanish giants.
• Ronaldo scored Portugal's equaliser in a 1-1 friendly draw with Huntelaar's Netherlands at the Estádio Do Algarve on 14 August 2013.
• Timo Hildebrand conceded seven goals in his two games against Madrid while with Valencia in 2007/08, his side losing 5-1 at Mestalla but triumphing 3-2 at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Chelsea welcome returning hero Drogba
Chelsea FC fans will always hold a place in their hearts for Didier Drogba but when Galatasaray AŞ visit with the tie at 1-1, they will be hoping he fires blanks.
Chelsea FC welcome Galatasaray AŞ and their former goalscoring hero Didier Drogba to Stamford Bridge for the second leg of their round of 16 tie, which is level at 1-1 after the first game in Istanbul.
• Drogba was part of the Chelsea side that won the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 2011/12, scoring a late equaliser and then the decisive penalty in the final shoot-out against FC Bayern München in Munich on 19 May 2012. That was the Ivorian's final kick for the club.
• This season Chelsea made up for their 2012/13 disappointment, when they became the first UEFA Champions League holders to fail to survive the group stage. That early exit was the only blot in 12 otherwise consecutive qualifying campaigns; this term, the Blues won their group for the eighth time in that period.
• José Mourinho masterminded Chelsea's sole round of 16 defeat between 2006/07 and 2011/12, against an FC Internazionale Milano side also featuring Wesley Sneijder in 2009/10.
• Although they reached the second group stage in 2000/01 and again the next year, Galatasaray's only past experience of the round of 16 came last year when they beat FC Schalke 04 4-3 on aggregate. The home leg ended 1-1, Burak Yılmaz opening the scoring. Hamit Altıntop and Burak were on target in the away match, substitute Umut Bulut firing the winner.

• The teams have met on one previous occasion, the 1999/2000 UEFA Champions League group stage. Chelsea won 1-0 at home, Shifty Petrescu (52) scoring against opponents who lost goalkeeper Claúdio Taffarel – now part of Galatasaray's coaching staff – to a 30th-minute red card. The Blues triumphed 5-0 away.

• The closest they came to victory was in the 1993/94 UEFA Champions League second round. Having trailed 2-0 early on, Cimbom led Manchester United FC 3-2 at Old Trafford midway through the second half, only for Eric Cantona to conjure an 80th-minute equaliser. Their away goals proved crucial in taking the Süper Lig side through after the home leg ended 0-0.
• In 1999/2000 Galatasaray beat Arsenal FC 4-1 on penalties after the UEFA Cup final in Copenhagen had finished goalless after extra time, becoming the first Turkish team to win a UEFA competition.
Match background
• Chelsea, looking to pick up a European trophy for a third straight year after capturing the UEFA Champions League in 2012 and the UEFA Europa League in 2013, topped Group E by a two-point margin from Schalke despite home and away defeats by Basel. They won all four other fixtures without conceding a goal, downing FC Steaua Bucureşti 4-0 away and 1-0 at home and Schalke 3-0 home and away.
• Chelsea have won six and drawn one of their seven home games in European knockout rounds since a 1-0 loss to Manchester United in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
• Mourinho, who has landed the UEFA Champions League with both FC Porto (2004) and Internazionale Milano (2010), is bidding to become the first manager to win the European Cup with three different teams. Only Bob Paisley (Liverpool FC 1977, 1978, 1981) has collected the trophy three times as coach.
• Galatasaray lost their first Group B match 6-1 at home to Real Madrid CF, Roberto Mancini subsequently replacing Fatih Terim as coach and overseeing a draw at Juventus in his first game on matchday two. • In UEFA competition Chelsea have lost the tie twice on the six occasions they have drawn their first leg away from home, most recently against FC Barcelona in the 2008/09 semi-finals (0-0 away, 1-1 home). Those four aggregate victories came after a 1-1 away draw, most recently against Liverpool in the 2007/08 semi-finals when they prevailed 3-2 at home after extra time.
• Galatasaray have won just two of the ten European ties in which they have been held at home in the first leg, thrashing OFK Beograd 5-1 in the second instalment of the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League third qualifying round after a 2-2 draw in Istanbul and overcoming Schalke at this stage of last season's competition (1-1 home, 3-2 away). That was the first time they had advanced after a 1-1 home draw, after four successive aggregate defeats.
Team ties
• Drogba was at Chelsea between 2004 and 2012 – playing under Mourinho from June 2004 to September 2007 – and scored 100 goals in 226 top-flight matches. He also won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two League Cups.
• Emmanuel Eboué represented Arsenal between 2005 and 2011, playing alongside Ashley Cole from 2004 to 2006.
• Mancini managed Manchester City from December 2009 to May 2013, guiding them to the Premier League crown in 2011/12. He also lifted the 2011 FA Cup.
