Soccer star fined $100,000 Cdn for failing to declare wife's handbag
Wed Aug 30, 10:13 AM

LANDSHUT, Germany (AP) - Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack was fined 70,000 euros ($99,450 Cdn) Wednesday for failing to declare to Germans customs a handbag he bought for his wife in Dubai.

The handbag initially cost the German captain 2,000 euros ($2,840 Cdn).

The Germany captain had tax evasion charges dropped and settled with the state court two days before the case was to go to trial.

Ballack's status as one of the world's highest-paid soccer players proved costly as the fine for an infraction in Germany is determined by income.

The court set the original fine at 50,000 euros ($71,030 Cdn) - the maximum allowed under German law - but Ballack appealed against the amount. According to Landshut court president Karl Woerle, that negated his right to negotiate a smaller fine.

Ballack then agreed to pay an extra 20,000 euros ($28,415 Cdn) to settle the matter before it went to court.

Charities will receive 65,000 euros ($92,355 Cdn) and court costs will cover the remaining 5,000 euros ($7,105 Cdn) of Ballack's fine.

Ballack brought back the bag for his wife in January from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, after a training camp with former club Bayern Munich.

I'm a little dissapointed about the lack of signings from Chelsea's part on the flanks. We saw the effects of losing Duff against Blackburn. Robben got injured and couldn't play and I think that Joe Cole was injured as well. The only three wingmen we have are Joe Cole, SWP, and Robben. Joe Cole's real position is more of an attacking midfielder as well.

We just have one left back in W Bridge so there are definetely gonna be some problems if some of our players get injuered. As for central defence, we only have three CB's (Terry, Carvalho, Bhoularouz, Gallas doesn't count) now that Huth's been sold.

I honestly think this is stupid as hell with us not being able to sign a LB. Everyone knew that Arsenal were gonna be stiv's when it came to us signing Ashley Cole and I don't think that giving them Gallas for cheap is a good idea. Why Chelsea gave up so easily on Phillip Lahm is ridiculous. We made a 10 million pound bid for Lahm which is always gonna get rejected. If we were willing to offer well over 20 million pounds for Ashley Cole, then why couldn't we offer 20 million for Phillip (who cares if Bayern get 20 million but it's bad handing Arse close to 30 million). Phillip Lahm is more versatile than Ashley Cole seeing how he can play on the right or left side of the park equally well and he can also play as a terrific Left wing.

Not to mention that Phillip's got an actual man name unlike Ashley, I'm just saying.

Bouhlarouz can also play RB and Paulo can play left back as well as Lahm, although I'd actually getting Lahm than Cole.

Paulo did not impress when he played at LB in Community shield

I wouldn't feel comfortable with Boula at RB. He would get exposed against speedy wingers.

And if Bayern don't sell Owen freaking Hargreaves for 25 million euros it's safe to say Lahm is not going for any money in the world.

Arsenal are complete wankers.

They should really realise that Gallas plus at least 5 million pounds is more than what Cole was worth but they had to screw it up. Couldn't even sort out a loan deal until the next transfer window for the two players.

Huth is gone so Chelsea really needs Gallas back now.

How is a player on the last year of his contract worth more than 10 million? Gallas + 5 mill would be a GOOD deal for Chelsea.

Gallas is a better player than Ashley Cole, but at the end of the day Chelsea have cover where he plays.

Gallas is a different player to Cole. Sure they are both defenders but Cole is a far superior forward player then Billy is. Cole will benefit Chelsea more than Gallas will benefit Arsenal, in my humble opinion :p

£5 million? haha.....now thats what I call a good deal :funny:

Not really man. I mean yes we are weak in the LB position, BUT dont forget we lost Campbell. Sure his form last season was crap but before that he was a monster. Maybe with Gallas we can establish a stronger back 4 with gallas helping out Hoyte or whoever it is that plays there. Only time and games will tell who got the better deal.

Anyways have fun with that traitor CU#$#. 90,000 a week haha greedy bastard.

I respect your honesty Pete but most of your fellow fans on the csr forums are not happy one bit about losing Gallas , and of course Bridge who has been playing well will feel betrayed and Jose was not pleased either according to reports.

Anyway good luck with your new guy. :amika:
