DO NOT BUY AN AMD.
Since you are into programming I do believe you know a few things about hardware. Just dont get a Vaio. They cost more than they should. You buy the sony part.. an extra +100 at least

Btw what lang you into? C++, Delphi, Java?

Well m not THAT good with hardware alex :$....so AMD is a no no eh...k so i will have to go for a Core Duo...some laptops come with an onboard NVIDIA chip (6150)....wats the performance like with this onboard GPUs ?

M a software engineer and currently a freelancer, basically my area is C++, .NET (self study)....m gonna go for a Masters degree soon (H)

keep the suggestions comin :)

thanx

If you want to play games, don't buy a laptop. They're getting better, but most laptops you are going to get (especially at that price) will not be able to play many computer games. My laptop (about $1000) from Dell two years ago probably can't handle Civ 3, much less Civ 4. It's a limitation that you need to understand before buying it. If you want a portable computer that can do a lot of things and can go anywhere, a laptop is a good option, but unless you are willing to spend a LOT of money and buy a HUGE laptop, you will not be playing new games.

haha Ruud...that first C++ program brings back some memories :mexican:

i know i wont be able to play crysis on a laptop but considering that i like to play games a lot, a laptop with a descent enough specs that can run atleast a demo on low/medium settings will be good enough....plus i will be buying a new desktop next christmas so m gonna save up for that

So my question...is the NVIDIA 6150 gpu a good choice ? Or r their better choices available in the Core Duo config....i want a gig of RAM, dont wanna spend upgrading later much ;)

dont care about the rest honestly apart from the battery life...any particular model spring to mind guys ?

Thanx

hey..

as alex said, go for the Core2Duo as a CPU. Core2Duo simply blasts AMD to hell with that bunch. And as a GPU, I would recommend nothing less than the ATI 1600-NVidia 7600 bunch if you want to play PES on it. but I`d prolly go for the NVidia 7900 chipset on a laptop if I were you.

You can simply go for the slower Core2Duo models to save money for a better GPU. Faster CPU isnt really that necessary.

a gig of RAM would be sufficient if you plan to run XP on it. but with Vista, meh. (:/)

good luck with your choice.

^thanx m8

Guys, i have just come across a notebook which will cost me 750 $...its a compaq model 6 sereis, cant remember the exact model number but here r the specs....m tempted :p

AMD Turion 64 X2
1.6 GHz CPU
1 gig Ram
120 GB HD
DVD RW
onboard Geforce 6150 128 MB + shared system RAM

Wat do ya say guys ?

seems to be a good value for money...

but, mate this is all about your needs.. first of all, it has a shared system RAM on GPU so basically you`ll have 1024-128=896MB`s of RAM.. besides, shared system RAM on GPU`s have serious compatibility issues on some games.. which is not a good thing if you wanna play some decent PES on it..

seriously, you may go for AMD for the CPU unit if you wanna save money, Core2Duo`s are great but AMD`s are good too, but again if I were you, I`d definitely put the emphasis on GPU unit.. 7600Nvidia or 1600ATI series at least. and dont go for shared system memories.

cheers.

yeah but the notebooks with 7600/1600 cards dont come for 800 $ :(...i have to consider my budget ya know !

I think there is an option to turn off the shared system RAM to gpu from the BIOS...so i will still have 128 MB dedicated VRAM for games

M still lookin for more options....will wait for a while before i buy one

cheers

The physical part of laptops (how comfortable they are to use) is important so don't overlook it. Battery life was the main factor for me. And don't let the people at the store bugger you into buying one from some average company. I have a Toshiba and an ACER. After using them both for months, I see why Toshiba has a good reputation and acer doesn't.

what you are forgetting tho is that toshiba and acer dont build the parts, so what really matters is hardware. Now if you can get a fancy box that caries all that hardware... thats also nice.

Hey man...i saw the compaq 3149 AU whic has AMD Turion, 1 GB RAM, Nvidia 6400 128 MB shared one, its avaliable at chroma for like 50 k...
check it out if you stay in mumbai.

And i really dont think an Intel CPU will do, they generally come with onborad graphics, atleast AMD has a gfx card!
even me plannin to buy one for my final year in engg.
