UEFA president Michel Platini wants to invite non-European teams to compete in the European Championship in the future, a report claims.

As the article says, the idea is still in early stages ...

I personally think "guest team" makes sense for South America, because they don't have many teams and qualification rounds there. However, many teams involve in qualification round so "guest team" doesn't make that much sense. On the other side, 2020 euro is a strange experience, so I guess this idea can be added as well.

There's no doubt Euro + Brazil/Argentina will have better quality than the world cup and I guess that's Platini's main goal here.

I doubt that ever happen with current load of club/country games ...

However, I would like to see a more competitive champions league or world club cup.

Not exactly a slap in the face, but definitely a slight. Europe has such depth of good teams that it seems silly to fill out the tournament with teams from another continent.

But the whole point is it's not the World Cup. UEFA wants to maintain their power, while FIFA is trying to reduce the influence of Europe on the World Cup. So that's where this idea takes root. And to be honest, with the whole Qatar fiasco, FIFA needs to be brought down a notch and UEFA is probably the only organization strong enough to fight them. It's a shitty situation overall.

Also, the comparison to South America inviting Mexico or Japan to the Copa America is a bit different. Europe is the deepest continent in terms of talent pool and competitive national sides, so inviting out of conference nations to participate seems unnecessary, whereas for South America, it makes sense.

However, I would like to see a more competitive champions league or world club cup.

I wouldn't mind seeing a "Euro League" of the best teams from each country, but the logistics would be a nightmare for promotion/relegation and scheduling.

Platini said he wants 40 teams instead of 32 in world cup.

First, quality > quantity, plz understand you bastard

Second, how this will work?
8 groups of 5, then 1 team won't play in last match, and that kind of unfair ...
10 teams of 4, then how teams will qualify for next round? we need 16 or 32 ...
