I'm banking on it being the second funniest film of the year, nothing's gonna beat Thank You for Smoking, but this should come close.

Thank you for Smoking was the funniest movie of the year?

Gosh you english have a weird sense of humour, I thought it was an excellent movie but don't even remember laughing once. I doubt it even intended to be funny, it's a satire not a comedy.

The two are hardly mutually exclusive. Life of Brian is a burning satire AND an amazingly funny comedy. The majority of satire is humorous, MOST satirical movies, television, magazines etc are also supposed to be comic. I dont tend to laugh out loud at films or television very much but I did when watching TYFS - found it incredibly funny.

I can understand why some are sick of him already, esp in the UK, since he's been recycling the same material for weeks now. But the promos don't really matter, just as long as the movie lives up to all the hype.
Speaking of which here are the first 4 minutes of the actual film. Only a few more hours till the premiere if you're lucky enough to be living in the US or Europe.

He was on Conan last night saying his penis was thick like a can of pepsi.

ya I saw that... he basically repeated everything from previous interviews and promotions.. only new thing I heard was when he said Kazakhstan's top 3 exports are potassium, apples, and pubis (H)

but ya, I hate how he's become so popular because this has basically killed the character off, he won't be able to do **** anymore without people knowing who he is (N)

Nah, I think this is pretty much the last we'll see of Borat. He now plans to develop his other character, Bruno, who I never thought was as funny. There's already been a big bidding war over the rights to the film though, apparantly. After that I guess he'll have to come up with something new but, given his track record, he should be more than capable.

But, bar the occasional award show appearance, I'm pretty sure this is the end of the line for Borat.

Have people forgot about the Ali G movies? I mean, they were apparantly TERRIBLE for non-hardcore Ali G fans. I thought they were pretty funny, but I'm a huge fan. Bruno is undoubtedly a weaker character than Ali G and certainly weaker than Borat, so why do they assume this movie will succeed. I would never bid for the rights to that movie.

Wow saw the movie today and it's hilarious. Much better than the Ali G movie.
This probally is now the end of Borat since every1 knows him now, but I read that they offered him $40million to make a Bruno movie already...
Best part in movie is when he has a naked wrestling scene with his producer and IN PUBLIC WITH REAL PEOPLE and it is a little nasty, but Borat has a censor over his penis(which is ridiculously big as a joke) and the other guy is so fat u can't even see nething too graphic.

Borat's a load of tosh. It doesn't fit the movie format at all. There's no real narrative and, strictly speaking, it's not a movie in the slightest.

But, hey, kids love it when people say stupid things. Huh-huh!

I think what people fail to understand is that Cohen's characters don't really try to paint in a bad way the people they are supposed to be mimicking - but rather the concepts they get people to say and do as a result of the portrayal he plays.

The reality is, if the people on the film didn't have such a reactionary issue - it wouldn't be as funny. He has someone tapped into that psyche and at times does expose xenophobia, discomfort, violence and racism that can be prevalent even in the most conciliatory of human beings.

You only have to look at some of the anti-Semitism and racism it draws out. As Cohen has said before, racism has much to do with ignorant conformity as it does intense bigotry (see the Holocaust as a prime example.) And to be honest, this is true of any social network. People will always try to go along with the crowd or modify their normal behaviour in certain environments (no matter how much your intelligence and rationale tells you its not right.) For instance no Harvard educated politician, would gladly accept Kazakhstan as a backward country as Borat tells it is. But when faced with it directly in your face, you could literally get that person to understand it and tell them that the sky is pink.

On a sociological study however I did find this intriguing.

But I think if you scratch away a lot of the hocus-interviews - then you find a really funny concept that doesn't have to preach to the over-educated or try to be pretentious, and instead relies at times, quite base humour to draw the laughs. But whoever said humour has to always be about fucking satire and irony.

Bottom line. Its funny.

Borat is said to be one of the funniest movies in years. The critics are loving it (more than 90% oin rotten tomatoes, mostly As and 4 and 5 star reviews) and the people too. the movie made 9 million bucks on friday only against 2 huge CGI movies and only in 800 theatres (the CGI movies opened in 3500 theatres).
critics say Sacha Baron Cohen could even get nominated for a comedy golden globe (Y)

The critical reception here has been amazing too. The Sunday Times, perhaps the most hardass reviewers of all, gave it five stars. Empire gave it five as have a splattering of other mags, and EVERYTHING else is giving it four. Never seen a film like this get such a reception, and the overall residing comment is that it's INCREDIBLY funny. I cannot wait, hopefully I will be able to see it next week.

Romazo Criminale is also out this week, it looks awesome.
