ok, i have been playing 2006 for 2 weeks now, so here it goes.
First the gameplay, compared to WE, it does come actually kind of close, but WE will win every time but Fifa 2006 has good gameplay. I have yet to score the same goal twice. So with licenses of course everyone knows FIfa wins. Sound Fifa wins. Presentation Fifa Wins. So WE better make their game gameplay very very very addicting in order to beat Fifa this year, other wise Fifa will be the soccer game to play and buy and worship. Thats my 2 cents. Even though the game cost me (My Dad) 50 dollars... :)

second thoughts on gameplay

Hello all,

I have played about 10-12 games now so far on FIFA for PS2.

I can say that I am enjoying it a little more. It's still FIFA don't get me wrong, but I believe it's the best FIFA yet. There are still some instances with ball and player physics that need to be taken into serious consideration.

I like the way the players react to team morale/chemistry, and how tired they get and react as well... The difference in play when the grass is damp and it's raining is considerably different as well. You can feel how different it is.

The way you play different with different players is not very evident. It seems everyone is equal, at least that's my take on it. And I'm not talking about signature moves or anything, but just making a run or kicking the ball seems to be the same for every player. This has been something that every FIFA has struggled with, and I don't know if they will fix that soon.

Regardless of that, I believe the shooting system is way better than before. You have to get used to it, but it's worth it. I haven't seen an unbelievably fast shot yet when the ball is in play, but I've seen speeding bullets come out of free kicks, which is definetely wrong and annoying.

I like the player animation variations and it seems that it's way more believable what they do with the ball on their feet than previous FIFAs.

I like to play in slow mode, I was noticing a lot of weird physics in normal mode, but when I switched to slow it all started to work nicely.

I still don't like how offside traps are extremely constant. There are talented players that can get off the trap in real life, but with these games, even PES5, it seems that is impossible.

Also, I've only had one instance that my attacker beat the defender in running towards the goal and had a clear chance for a goal, but I tried to lob the keeper and missed it... (practice more I guess...)

The free kick system is very smooth, I think. You can move the directional up and down as well as sideways to change the angle of your shot. You have to differentiate the power you put on the ball to get different results, what I didn't understand is why the blue bar on the power bar changes width from shot to shot with the same player. Supposedly your power should not exceed that width of the blue bar, but it varies from shot to shot, even from the same place (training mode).

I didn't like the pk shoots. They seem very slow and it looks like a different game. The one I had I was playing in the afternoon, but the shootout looked like I was playing at night.

I have yet to master the different attacking plays and modes, but I do like how defensively both the AI on CPU and on your team work well and smart. A lot of people have complained about keeper's AI, but so far I haven't seen any weirdness with it.

I like the variations of play, using the wing, the midfield, switching play from side to side from the AI as well. I think it's very realistic in that aspect. You occasionally notice weird physics on some of these shots, but hell, they're not as annoying as in the past.

One thing that drove me nuts is that I would wait for my player to make a run on a wing or behind me to receive the ball and that wouldn't happen very often. I don't know if there's a command to make that happen, because I was used to doing that with OTB, even though I cheated with it most of the time, making unbelieveably unrealistic passes...

I've seen my players run to receive the ball a couple of times though, so I think they're in the game, but should be smarter and pop up more often.

I don't think the game is too scripted. A lot of people complained that it is, but I didn't think so... the ball physics is scripted still, especially when it's running down the field, but shots and passes are much much (much) better than previous versions. Maybe it's because I'm playing in slow mode... I don't know...

I think it's a very solid game, and I have to say that sometimes you almost think you've seen a real play, resembling a real footy game. This is the feeling you have with a lot of PES plays, but FIFA is getting close.

I have to make a quick comparison to PES gameplay just to be fair, I would give a 9 to PES gameplay and a 7.7/8 for FIFA.

Not bad at all...

Ok, i'm a WE guy, but neither the negative nor positive reviews on this thread has convinced me.
Come on guys! We need real reviews, something we can actually go by.
I'm driving up to MA and I might get it there on Sunday, so please, there 2 more days before we get some good reviews for this game.
So far i've heard good things (outside these forums), but I want to hear it from here to make sure I know what i'm getting myself into.
If I dont get anything by the time Monday comes around i'll just have to rent it then.

I hope mine was descriptive enough for you dude... (H)

anyone know the release date for pc in the usa?
It should be out already, I saw it at work a couple of days ago.

I have one question and hopefully someone can answer it ASAP: how does the shooting system compare to WE 8 (which I'm playing right now) on the PS2? I'm actually considering buying this one after I had given up on it about 3-4 years ago.

In WE you understand how you push the button will give the type of shot your looking for...its a better feel. In FIFA its hard to tell what type of shot your gonna get when you push the shoot button. It's hard to explain...its just the feel of the control.

I think it's a little different than WE8, but you can control the shots more accurately than in previous FIFAs, I've tried to push the buttons, once twice and three times, like with WE and I've had some different kinds of shots, the two, three push was more like a low shot (similar to WE)...

Now, I haven't had that happen too often, so I'm not sure if that's the correct way to do a low shot, or if the AI just chose that shot based on where I was... I dunno...

I like it a lot better than previous versions, but with WE you have a lot more control over your shot...

You've just gotta get used to the power bar... it does make a lot of difference... With WE you would never press it too much otherwise the ball would go off the stadium, with FIFA you definetely push a little harder (longer) for a longer, harder shot... (H)

Great impressions mano.

Nice to see some honest information without bashing FIFA or PE in the process.

The main negatives I have been reading are the lack of CPU subs and the crazy management happenings that cause you to be fired even after doing the right things.

MAJOR problems:

Goalkeepers still suck. They are so useless, on hard shots from an angle they punch it in the air, resulting in it floating in the goal anyway. On 1-v-1s they stand there and dont even dive, pretty much allowing you to walk right in the goal. Blah

A lot of glitches, bugs. I scored, and it didnt count. I shot it and it went in the net and the commentator said "ohhh nice try" WTF this game isnt suppost to do that. And also, I was playing vs my friend and he dribbled and pushed 3 of my defenders along with him, like the defenders froze and they were gliding along the pitch. ???????? Also there was a time frame of 10 seconds where no one could touch the ball, you would just go through it and not dribble.

What the hell, this game isnt suppost to be this way right? Is it just my game or what? And by the way its easy as hell to score now on world class, certain shots that you can do consistently can't be saved by the goalie, ever.
Good assessment, and I agree with it based on only a few games of play on console. On the bugs, though, the rented copy we had had the same issues, so I think this could be a larger problem than just your copy. I was playing as Milan, Sheva blasted one wide, went about 5 yards past the far post, and then the crowd came to life and he started celebrating, because a goal was given, despite the fact that the ball was clearly 20 yards away, outside of the net, on the endline :|

Anyway, I hope thats something that can be worked out quickly enough

Bought it, played about 25-30 games and I'm going to return it ASAP. The game is definitely an improvement over previous versions but several bugs were just too annoying to ignore (ball going into the net and not counting :|) and some other things that I just couldn't take anymore. Overall, the game isn't bad but some of the bugs in the game just annoyed the shit out of me. Maybe next year it'll be better.

Your version might be bugged... I had no problems with it, except that when I play kick-offs with international teams, my first half only lasts 30 seconds...

everything else is great... :hump:
