I disagree with some because they had a big impact at a club before the "flop".

Shevchenko is a Milan legend and arguably was the best striker at the time of his prime. When you think of him (unless you only watch the Premiership) "flop" is not the first thing that comes to mind.

Same applies to Veron, he was at a world class level at Parma and Lazio and was great at Estudiantes towards the end of his career. This applies to other players on the list too...

But the likes of Jeffers is exactly what should be on the list. And people like Andy Carroll too imo because he only had one good season in the Premiership and more than 1 flop seasons.

Why call it all-time flop XI and not all-time Premiership flop XI?

I disagree, he was hyped because of what he could do at a young age, but no one ever paid... any money for him, so he hasn't ever flopped.

Denilson is probably the biggest flop I've ever seen. That was a world record transfer.

The Legend
I wouldn't really call Freddy a flop either. He is what he was always going to be, an undersized attacker with a bit of speed. MLS was desperate for press at the time and hyped the shit out of him. He's in training with Blackpool now, hopefully something happens with that.

It's not easy to define a flop though, Denilson is an obvious one, but other players are flops for certain teams and then productive for others. Soldado, for instance, is threatening to become a big time flop for Tottenham but he could probably go somewhere else and contribute. Like Gervinho did.

Amauri was a flop for both Juventusand italy after we nationalized him..that's a special kind of flop

I don't think so because at his short lived peak, he achieved a lot. He was more of a bargain than a flop. He was bought for only 6 millions and scored a number of winners which contributed to a few titles. He had 1 very good and 2 good seasons with us. This season he's pretty bad.

a qualifier is certainly necessary in many cases ... Wenger's first Arsenal was built around a few Serie A flops, but they went on to become Premiership Invincibles ...

so a transfer fee is a prerequisite to be a flop? that's just plain not true ... in American sports, transfer fees are very rarely involved when players move team, which would mean virtually no one could be considered a flop signing ...

it is the hype around a transfer fee that creates the expectation ... so **hype** is the key factor for a flop ...

that brings us neatly onto young Fredua Adu ...

how could anyone pay for him when he was under age? but the MLS certainly paid him well -- they only went and made him the highest paid player in the league at age 14 ... by the time Freddy was 16, he was an MLS flop ...

exactly ... hype that involved a paid-for endorsement by Pelé himself, complete with photoshoot and all:

Adu certainly flopped big time ...

He's got a case of what you call "Mexi-penis envy".

Flops in American sports are judged almost entirely on the draft pick which was used to select a player. Free Agents aren't usually considered flops.

a cursory google shows that free agents are called flops, even in American sports:

Is Mike Wallace a free-agent flop for Miami Dolphins?

Four NHL free agent flops who turned it around

2013 MLB Free Agent Flops

it may not be common parlance for you, which is fair, but your idea of a transfer fee prerequisite doesn't hold ...

Freddy Adu was the #1 pick in the '04 MLS Draft ... AND he was immediately made the league's highest player, which I think is unprecedented in any American sports league ...

Go look up the #1 picks in MLS and tell me what the expectations are for that slot. Now compare with #1 NBA picks, for example. Freddy Adu was 14, he was in MLS for seasoning before going overseas at 18 years of age, he was never expected to dominate that league.

how many #1 NBA picks have had Michael Jordan kissing them on the cheek during their presentation (at age 14, no less)?

I called Adu an MLS flop ... by 18, FOUR YEARS after his draft, he was long since a has-been ...

for the record, I hate that he was a flop ... I'd love to see the next Pelé be an American -- it would instantly change the perception, both locally and globally, of America's place in world football ...
