Back when it was created by Muhamed, Muslims were at war with the other tribes in Arabia, to convert to Islam at the time meant choosing to be attacked by the other tribes and was a declaration of war against said tribes. So if you coverted you were given military secrets, reverting back almost always meant you went to the other tribes and told them where the muslim army was hiding, number of men and horses, who was spying, etc. etc.
