How are 1000 deaths not a big deal? 1000 deaths for any reason, anywhere in the world is generally cause for outrage. Especially in the Middle East.

Fan Favourite
Sochi was good. They also have the Olympics, if at risk of anything Russia is in the running for best world cup ever

Sochi was unbelievably random. The snow melted and the cross country skiiers were taking their clothes off.

It's too early for Aus IMO. 22/26 should be the ones we aimed for

We did aim for 22. With a $1 mln animated kangaroo. :bouncy:

Also, watching the video for the bid again; I can't help but feel quite a bit of irony about the kangaroo stealing the trophy and how the actual bidding process was determined by the highest number of dollars. :nape:

Another point which is festering in me about the 2022 bid. Australia's move to the AFC was least liked by the teams out west - ie: the Middle East. The Chairman of our FFA, Frank Lowy, is a big retail giant who owns the Westfield Group here in Australia. That's great; but he's also Jewish (born in Czechoslovakia). Not to sound too left-field, but I wonder if there's any anti-Semitism on the part of the Arab-Persian bloc involved in the politics of Asian football?

Although the Alamodome smells kinda funky. They'd need a few crates of Febreze just in case.

What a mess. Any of the other bids were better.

The Australian bid going out first was a joke. Huge untapped market, first world facilities, a nation proven to be able to host events on this scale, never hosted a World Cup, and in the same confederation as eventual bid winners Qatar.

Really angers me that such obvious corruption was let slide.

Yeah, but that was 28 years ago, before a majority of the actual players in 2022 would have even been born. Plus, the US still has the most potential for growth of the game aside from China and India which are completely untapped. I'd be fine with having it in Australia, but it only has ~25 million people and only 5 cities with over 1,000,000 inhabitants (making the construction of stadiums awkward if following the max 2 in a city rule). By contrast the United States is the third most populous nation on earth with the facilities already in place for the most part. If we're talking about the best possible host for a World Cup, the US is probably in the top 2 or 3 with England and maybe somewhere else like Germany or Italy.

Depends how a city is defined. Penrith is over 50km from Sydney, that'd certainly be classed another city in most European nations. There are similar centres in south western Sydney, eastern Melbourne and on the north coast above Sydney (Gosford and Newcastle). Two stadiums in Melbourne, two in Sydney, one in Penrith (or either far NW or SW Sydney), one in Perth, Adelaide, and one in Brisbane would work fine. In fact, you could even throw in Canberra. And most of the stadiums are even already there. Sydney has two. Melbourne two. Brisbane one. Canberra Stadium would need to be expanded slightly (which is happening anyway I believe).

Australia is also a very similar time zone to China, Japan and Korea, as well of large untapped parts of Asia, and also has HUGE tourism from those nations.

Whilst you point out the US had the World Cup before these players were around, the host isn't about the players, it's about the fans, and the life span of your average fan.

Australia have also shown, with the Sydney Olympics, how well we can put on an event of this scale. The Atlanta Olympics were terrible in comparison.

We were primarily aiming at 2022. Only threw our hats in at 18 because it was decided the same time.

lol, yes! actually, since NM only have one stadium, I'd say dump 'em ... announce that Toyota Stadium (Frisco) will be expanded, and call it Texas 2022 ...

The Atlanta Olympics were "terrible" because of a terrorist attack. They were great in all other aspects. World Cups aren't held in single cities, so you couldn't have someone targeting a centralized place like the Olympic Village or wherever the Atlanta bombing was.

Bobby

The Legend
Atlanta wasn't bad. The terrorist attack was awful but the bid itself was fine. They managed to turn a profit and not wind up with any white elephants. Georgia Tech got a brand new aquatics center, the Braves got a stadium, and the city got a really nice convention center.

Xifio

The Von Trapps
the aquatics center was an impressive facility even a decade on ...

Georgia State got the Olympics Village living quarters, which Tech eventually annexed -- made sense, since they were right across the street from Bobby Dodd ... the upper floors of the east building in the Village provide the best view of the midtown/downtown Atlanta skyline ...

It wasn't just the terrorist attack. Apparently transport was terrible. And many considered it overly commercial - even for the Olympics.
