FACTBOX
  • Germany could become the greatest 3rd place team in all of history, could make it 4.
  • This will be Uruguay's first time in the last 4, since 1970.
  • If Klose is fit he can surpass Ronaldo as the competitions highest scorer, might be his last chance.
  • Forlan is in the race for the Golden Boot, currently 1 behind the leaders Sneijder and Villa.
  • Last time Uruguay and Germany met in a 3rd Place Game, was in 1970, with a 1-0 win to West Germany.
  • Is West Germany the good or bad one? (I know I'm not only one wondering (H))

Why its important match...

Germany can make history by being the team with most 3rd places, can make it 4 and open up 2 gap on everyone else (H)

This is always such a pitiful match. Two sides that lost the semi's. Most of the times the two teams look like they rather want to go home then play another match.

i realize Uruguay logo got 4 stars, lol.

I was just about to point that out. Usually only historian football fans know this, but i'll explain it anyways.

FIFA actually organized the "FIFA Amateur World Championships" in 1924, and 1928 (under the Olympic umbrella, due to budget issues).
Unlike Club football, national teams MUST have the approval of FIFA before putting stars on their kit.

FIFA (on the the behest of Julles Rimet himself) have stated (and I have scanned documents from official FIFA sources to prove this) in various revisions of the FIFA Constitution that yes, Uruguay are : 4 Time FIFA World Champs.

In S. America this is common knowledge, Uruguay are usually referred to as the "4 time FIFA champs". But some fans think it's false just because the website states Uruguay are "2 time WORLD CUP champs". :)

Anywho. That's a little bit of nice trivia for you guys. The first FIFA World title final was not Uruguay v. Argentina in 1930, but Uruguay v. Switzerland in 1924 :)

1- Brazil- 5
2- Uruguay and italy = 4
3- Germany= 3
4- Argentina- 2
5- France and England 1 :bob: :coffe-anim:

ps- BTW, I work as a football historian for a living. I love this stuff. :biggrinx::biggrinx:

I usually compare the 2 extra stars for Uruguay with Dynamo Berlin's stars, but whatever. I don't consider anything before the War to have any bearing on anything, so it doesn't mean much to me.

Belgium doesn't put a star on their shirt for the 1920 Olympics, but again, whatever.

I tip the Germans to win. If Forlan and Lugano aren't fit for Uruguay, they shouldn't be risked in this game. I say play Scotti, Gargano, Eguren, Lodeiro and Caceres. I also hope that Kiessling plays for the Germans.

Well the thing is FIFA had nothing to do with the 1920 Olympics.

Also many historians consider the 1928 FIFA/Olympic games to have shown the highest standard of football until 1954. The sport had already become a worldwide phenomenon by that point and had a classic match between 2 of the best teams of all time (Italy 1928 = same as the 1934 team , vs. the classic 3x world title winning Uruguay).

the idea that Uruguay refused to show up for 1934 and 1938 has sparked debates for decades on "who would have won" (both were the best 2 football nations of the first 1/2 of the 20th century).
That match in 1928 had both teams in their prime (Uruguay won btw, in a classic encounter).

1928 sported many all star teams , and until the mid 70s , the final between Uruguay and Argentina attracted the highest ticket demand around Europe for a game in history (over 250,000 tickets demanded).

Uruguay and Argentina basically introduced a tactical style of play which changed the game forever (in both 1924 and 1928). To ignore these tournaments is ludicrous, especially considering that the 1924 tournament is credited as the one that made football huge worldwide (mostly in part thanks to Uruguay, who also invented the "Lap of Honour" after their victory over the Swiss).

Sorry if I rambled too long. But if you guys have any questions, I'd be glad to fill anything else in. :)

Well, let's be honest, the best team from the first half of the 20th Century was Austria's Wunderteam. The only problem was they ran up against Mussolini's refs in the 1934 World Cup and the Anschluss before the 1938 World Cup.

Oh well, we might as well give up right now. Octopus Paul has said we're going to lose.

He has only shown an ability to pick Germany games. He might not be correct for other games.
