Building my first desktop

how much did you pay for it?

so, the last time I was into desktop builds/purchase and usage, some years ago, I remember that my PC was usually outdated not long after I got it back home... is it still as rapid now? Been thinking about building a desktop and acquiring it piece by piece but just worried about needing to buy new parts as soon as I get it together...

Thats why you need to buy high end stuff right from the beginning. You enx up saving in the long run. For graphics card, gtx 960 should be the absolute minimum.

I have an i7 3770k and gtx 760 which is considered a budget graphics card and it still kicks ass after 1 year. I expect it to be good for at least 3 years. I played watchdogs, TR, GTA 5 on high gfx. Far cry 4 is also excellent. If you can aford a gtx 980 go for it though. As for me when the graphics card is not good enough, I may do SLI.

What were your specs? I have a friend who got a gtx 460 4-5 years ago and only now he is feeling the need to upgrade. He has been able to play high end graphics on high in thess years.

From what I've heard - It's better to save money and get all (or most) of the pieces at once rather then bit by bit

can't remember since it was so long ago, but it was high end at the time, had the best system for about 3 months... hehe

"high end" or "the best system" will never last 3 months. Either your system was not really high end or times have changed. I let the experienced PC builders comment on that.

3 months was an exaggeration, but it still didn't take too long for it to go from the best computer in my class group to one of the lesser systems.. this was about 15 years ago though when the upgrades were really rapid, faster and faster processors constantly etc...

Please describe for me, from your personal experience, how all graphics cards look on the screen. Please talk about the GTX 960 and 3 cards on either side better and worse. Describe your experiences with these cards across several games.

Maybe I'll consider it, where I checked there weren't many NZXT cases that support water cooling as I wanted.

I have no "personal experience" with graphics card other than my own. Reason why I think gtx x60 should be the minimum is because I have a 760 and I do get lag (although not very often) on "very high" settings and it runs "high" graphics pretty well. Therefore if you want to play very high settings you may need a x70 or x80. I honestly did not notice much difference between high and very high so it doesn't matter for me. Some gamers are particular about these minor differences.

If you want yo know a graphics card on either side of the gtx 960, look at this excellent hierarchy:

Not familiar with water cooling systems but mine has a lot of space and there is a sace on the roof for a radiator.

Here's a picture that I googled.

Roof can be taken off and the radiatior can be installed there.,

I found a good one but the price almost doubles, not sure if it's worth it.

The Phantom 530

"double the price" is still $150 which is not bad at all. I think its worth the extra price but maybe the superior design and maybe slightly superior build quality is not a priority for you.

If I get some extra cash, maybe another project will pop up, I'll get that one then.

This desktop is now 2 years old and is still fantastic. I have played many games on it on maximum graphics with no problems. However as expected (given I have a budget GPU), newer games are starting to lag slightly so its time to upgrade the GPU.

I have an NVIDIA GTX 760 and I plan to buy another GTX 760 and do a 2 way SLI. I have seen benchmarks and this system beats the GTX 780. I would not be surprised if it equals or almost matches the GTX 1080 as well. If I do a 2 way SLI, I will probably buy a used GTX 760 which I can get for 100 USD.

Anyone has experience with 2 way SLIs?

it wont equal nor match 1080.

I have had SLI setup with both my laptops and desktops. I wouldn't recommend it. always have the single best gpu you can have. 100$ is not cheap for a gtx760.. you can have a solid 1070GTX or a Radeon 490x for something like 300-350$..
