Nah I'd have to disagree with you there. Think we've made some genuienly good signings. Lallana should be great (if he stays fit) and even moreno has great potential as a wingback. We were most let down last season by erratic decisions by Brendan.

Ings has excellent potential and Milner is very solid (which is what our midfield needs)

If we can marry it up with perhaps Kovacic from Inter or a world class striker I'd be very happy.

Also delighted if we sign Clyne from Southampton.

exactly ...

Tom, you seem very optimistic -- and credit to you for it -- but I'm not sure why ...

Rodgers is still around, so his tacticking may lead to some erratic choices again ...

Lallana has never been anywhere close to being called "great", so it'd come out of nowhere if he were suddenly playing at that level ...

I'm not sure who would pay a cent for Balotelli, or would want to do anything other than take him on loan while you guys continue to pay his wages ... Borini and Aspas aren't even worth discussing ...

apart from being English, and having "experience" (the quality of which is debatable), I personally don't see how Milner can replace Gerrard ... he can't deliver goals like Gerrard in his prime, and can't play DLP like Gerrard in his twilight ...

lastly, who do you have in mind for the world class striker who is going to join you? (I would also like to take this opportunity to direct you to the Question of the Week thread, so you can chime in on the topic of world class forwards in general ...)

Nah you make a fair point in that a world class striker is unlikely to come to Liverpool, that's where I feel far less optimistic, but after watching most of our signings from last summer for a year I can honestly say that almost all of them possess great potential. I also feel that Lallana is an excellent player who will go onto have a very good premier league campaign if he manages to stay fit.

I take your point on Milner but he is a different player to Gerrard. You don't play that many games for England and win a league title with City if you're that shit. Also, it speaks volumes that most City fans (at least what I've read) wanted him to stay at the Etihad. But either way, neither he or Ings is a gamble due to their miniscule transfer fees.

Balotelli is, you're right, an odd one. He may well be asked to stay on at Liverpool and do very little or we will sell at a reduced price.

Liverpool's biggest problems are Sterling and Rodgers:
- Sterling will eventually be sold, so who will that large pot of money be spent on? That's a worry, as you said, which world class striker would want to come?
- Rodgers has the potential to be a very good manager but his stubbornness is disastrous. Mourinho surely showed him that you need to be a pragmatist and adaptable to change throughout a season but Rodgers seems incapable of this.

So, it's not that I'm overly optimistic - but some of our signings from last year WILL begin to bed in and both Milner and Ings represent low-risk purchases. It'll be interesting to see if we can actually bring in that world class striker though.

Lallana is no pup ... he's 27, and his biggest accomplishment to date is -- as Sir_Didier_Drogba alluded to -- being one of the protagonists for a midtable club trying to break into Europe ... what do you see in him?

I totally agree that Milner and Ings are low risk ... but they aren't high yield either ... the latter metric is the one that matters when even pretending to be title challengers ...

sure, Milner won a title with City, but he was a bit-part player filling out the local quota requirement ... he didn't even play half the games that season, and even those were mostly as a sub ... that City fans wanted him to stay shouldn't be surprising, considering he's the only English outfielder they owned ...

and Ings? he barely broke 1 goal in 2 games in the bleeding Championship ... being a youngster is not an excuse either: he's 22 turning 23 ... Suárez was 23 turning 24 when he joined you guys ... would it be anything other than a joke to compare them on quality or potential?

Chelsea discarded De Bruyne, and are about to do the same with Oscar ... that's their quality threshold ... how are Liverpool going to compete with that?

I hope I'm wrong in my skepticism ... in terms of English football, there's nothing more I'd like to see next season than you guys drawing level with Man Yoo on 20 league titles ... but do you honestly think you are going to be genuine contenders for the title next season? and if you're not, isn't that regressing from nearly winning it last year?

I think you misunderstand. To me 2013/14 WAS the blip. We are nowhere near close to mounting a title challenge but we can hope to push again for top four. We cannot compete in money terms with any of the big four and so I'm looking more realistically at our prospects. This season was disappointing but in truth it was probably closer to the level we are actually at. Our defence is weak, our midfield has just had its heart ripped out and we recently sold one of the best players in the world upfront. I just feel that our signings from last year (some of them) and a few more sensible ones this year could help us to push again for CL. If we can get there and this time stay there then it will be a good place to push on from.

Having said all that - Liverpool HAVE spent shit loads in the past 5 years and its hugely disappointing to be in this position.

what that cursory analysis proves is that you're right about the 2nd place finish being the outlier ... BUT, it is also clear that the difference between Liverpool competing for the title and barely competing for Europe is just ONE genuine superstar in the attacking third ... **THIS** is what I would be more focused on ...

it also shows that the transfer strategy prioritizing local purchases has very consistently been a bust ... foreign purchases are basically 50/50 ... this is one area where things need to change ...

even if local players are a priority, the handling of Raheem Sterling belies that approach entirely -- here is a British passport holder who could be the homegrown mainstay of the first XI, along side Henderson ... instead, Sterling's agent has been allowed to much room to cast doubt over that future ... no one will pay Suárez money for him, and his agent has already publicly created a rift between player and club ...

you guys need a Director of Football with a clear vision ... a quality threshold, irrespective of nationality, should be the first item on the to-do list ...

I hope Liverpoools' owners do not see Xifio's post because I am loving Liverpool's decline.

Jokes aside, I think Milner for free and Ings for like 7 millions is pretty good compared to for example Carroll for 35 and Downing for 20. They may not be what will propel Liverpool to be title challengers but they will serve as great backup players. Liverpool however needs worldclass players in defense and midfield. Can is pretty good at DM if you can get a decent right back (good luck).

Xifio I don't disagree. My simple, original point was that Ings and Milner seem like good buys in my opinion. I agree we then could do with a superstar but frankly it's unlikely to happen. Perhaps I'm just being realistic.

Xifio

The Von Trapps
I get it, man ... I'm just bullish that being realistic and being title contenders should be the same thing for Liverpool ... and given the level of investment you guys are consistently capable of, you should be right up there ... it's clearly a misguided transfer strategy that's holding you back ...

Really good AMC, should be a Sterling replacement if anything. You'll see him leading a Neymar-less Brazil to the Copa America in the next couple weeks.

Not to be too pedantic about this, but the the inital fee was just below 30 million euros like you said, but it could rise up to 41 million euros because of some add-ons and extra clauses. At least that's what I read.

Also another bad news for us on the horizon. Looks like they might be getting Clyne as well just for 17,5 million euros. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfers/11697503/Liverpool-transfer-news-Nathaniel-Clyne-12.5m-deal-almost-done.html if you believe what's written in that article. I was really hoping that we would get the guy instead.

Apparently, Liverpool are interested in Javier Hernandez of Manchester United.

Hernandez at Liverpool > Owen at ManUtd ???

Your thoughts?

Oh by the way Rafa, I got a message for you:
After winning the CL in 2005, you said you wanted to stay at Liverpool for 20 more years. That means you have up until 2025 to coach at Anfield. So go to Madrid and enjoy your 6 month beach holiday. They will get rid of you when you ask Garreth Bale to play RB and allow Ronaldo to score 2 goals max. every month. At that time, we will be doing the same with Brendan Rodgers at Anfield.

Your chance to return to Liverpool - January 1, 2016. Get ready Rafa. Enjoy your tan now because the weather will be changing on New Year's day.

I'd rather have him go to Southampton to be honest since he'd probably get more playing time over there, but I hold no grudge against Liverpool so I guess I wouldn't mind at least.
