USA National Team Thread

The Von Trapps
what about all the other Germans that Klinsmann has shepherded into the squad?

also, this applies to all the dual citizens in the team from bigger footballing nations:

from the current crop, I believe it's only the Scandinavians who have regarded the US as their big team chance, since their home countries aren't World Cup grade at the moment ...

I think Fabian Johnson is pretty good. It's weird that no one on the US coaching staff seems to agree with me.

Starting XI
so how's people's perception of Aron Johannson so far? think he's got what it takes to be a starter in the WC, super sub or stays on the bench?

I'm excited to see USA in the world cup... both because I used to live there and now of course since there's an Icelander in the team

Feelings are mixed here about him, the board for the Icelandic NT tried to persuade him, desperately and pathetically, some people think of him as a traitor, but others, like myself think... since the rules are the way they are, and you've got a chance to go to the WC, why the fck not?

The Legend
He's our number two striker, I think. I'd like to see him start with Altidore, personally. People seem excited about him.

The Von Trapps
Jozy scored, the defensive choices look settled, and the 4-2-3-1 system is set ... time to start feeling quietly optimistic about the opener?

He's going to score the goal that gets USA through to the semis. [/Sir_Didier_Drogba]

It's a 4-4-2 narrow diamond with Dempsey trying to do his best Suarez impersonation. Honestly, I love this formation and I now believe the US will come out of Group G. Bradley is completely freed of defensive responsibility as the most advanced midfielder (if you count Dempsey as a forward), and his creativity is really shining through in these tune up matches. The best part about Bradley is that he's so fit and such a great player that he still gets back to defend, which helps so much; at times he'll track back so far that he's the most defensive midfielder, and then break out so quickly on the counter that he's back in his AMC position. If some good European clubs have any brains, Bradley shouldn't spend long in Toronto; this is a guy who should start for a Champions League team. I can't believe we have a player like this on the USA. I knew he was great, but I thought he was great by US standards, not great by footballing standards.

The last time he was used as an attacking midfielder was as a 20 year old for Heerenveen and he scored 16 goals in the Eredivisie that season. He could start for Manchester United tomorrow.

consenting applause on all the rest (as the country rides a quiet wave of optimism going to Brazil), but please explain this:

US is running a diamond right now.

Goes something like:

Bradley
Jones-Bedoya
Beckerman

There definitely are no wingers on the pitch, I don't know why you think it's 4-2-3-1. Width is provided by the fullbacks who are very attacking, and Dempsey kind of roaming around. I think it really suits the personnel; we don't really have a decent winger in the squad, and of course I wrote an essay on why it's good for Bradley.

E:
Jurgen Klinsmann may say that formations don't matter, or that the way they're discussed is archaic, or any number of other things. And while I think there's some merit to his point - I wrote last year about how blanket discussion of formations can lead to sloppy analysis - I, by and large, can't get behind his statements.

Especially because he's now gone with the same tactical look for the last four games. The diamond midfield in a 4-4-2 is a very specific set, one that's not common on the world stage, and it takes very specific instructions to play. It doesn't just happen by accident, like how the flat 4-4-2 can suddenly look like a 4-1-4-1 or a 4-5-1 or a 3-5-2, etc.

So I think it was a little willful misdirection from Der Golden Bomber, which is fine - mostly because I love the diamond. I think it's an incredibly useful formation for a team that has a conservative gameplan

He goes on to compare Jermaine Jones to Gattuso, which under the circumstances I think it relatively accurate and especially because Milan used a form of the diamond midfield in the mid-00s when they were having a lot of success. Gattuso was misunderstood as a holder, he really was a guy who would dart all over the field breaking up plays, not holding the line in midfield, and he was allowed to do this because Pirlo played deep and so did whoever else was in that midfield (Ambrosini). The US has had problems with a Bradley-Jones midfield because Jones adventures out of position to destroy plays and players, which left Bradley holding the midfield and not allowing his talent in the attacking game to shine.

With Beckerman providing the platform in midfield, both Bradley and Jones are freed up to do what they do best. It's also a good thing that the 4-4-2 diamond is defensive, so the US isn't going to get caught out of position on defense very often, which is obviously a good thing. In the last decade we've had most of our success by defending deep. The diamond also assists with keeping possession, a thing we've struggled with forever. I really think Klinsman made a genius call by going to the diamond.

The Von Trapps
I asked coz this warped setup is generating a lot of discussion ...

I read the Doyle article ... I agree with comparing Jones to Gattuso's role ... the question is: they may dart around, but what is their default position defined as?

even though Carletto's Milan midfield diamond, or the latter x-mas tree, isn't really comparable to the formation today (Rui Costa was a TQ, Bradley is not), it clearly shows where Ringhio's default position is set at:

4-2-3-1 doesn't suppose/necessitate wingers at all, which is how a narrow and warped 4-2-3-1 can exist ... and where I would set Jones' (MC) default position, which is why I'd call it a 4-2-3-1:

supposedly it was intended to be a 4-2-3-1:
Regardless of what it looked like on paper (the U.S. players claimed it was a 4-2-3-1), it appeared to be a much closer representation of how the U.S. will play against Ghana.
but the way the setup morphs, I don't think there's necessarily a right answer, other than taking Klinsmann's word for it (if/when he gives it) ...

To me it looks like a diamond with a few players given license to roam, but it is something different and perhaps hard to define by rigid classical formations. Either way, I think it is going to be very difficult for opposing teams to crack, and I also think that it appears to be the most effective way to utilize the particular talents of the US personnel.

Really good job by Klinsman; I had forgot, but recently read that Klinsman experimented with a diamond with some success in his early days with Team USA. It's possible that he decided years ago to go with this narrow formation and was training on it whenever the team got together, but he refused to unveil it in games for other teams to get a detailed scouting book on the system. If that is the case, it's pretty brilliant.

So they would train on two different systems? One for the qualifiers and one for the finals?

Iceland was the last Scandinavian team in contention to qualify for the 2014 WC. If Johannsson hadn't have chosen the US, sure Mexico might not have made it, but he could have pulled something off in Zagreb. Also, Off Topic, but where is Piotr Trochowski now? Just because you pick the bigger team doesn't mean that it'll pick you consistently either.

our back line will be our demise, you know the back line is bad when klinsman tells beasley to play in the back line and defend.

the only chance we have is to beat either germany or portugal, with the priority being whoever loses between germany and portugal.

as far as ghana i feel revenge will be fulfilled when we meet monday night.

bad game by usa sticking to their typical style of counter attack football. ghana deserved a win or at least a draw but their touch in final third was horrible plus why the hell did they have Prince Boateng in the bench.

ghana did play well, they dominated actually, i really like their team and their style of play.

we need to keep possession, going up against stronger opponents our tactics will not get it done.

not sure what ghana's world ranking is but i think if they could play better in the attacking third they could give germany and portugal a tough time.
