The thing is for the first time in absolutely ages you have four top quality defenders.... your first choice defense this season is one of the very best in the league (and it's been years since we could honestly say that) BUT the problem is it just takes a couple of them being out injured or suspended or whatever and you are back to real real rubbish.

Gibbs is the weakest link but a defense of Sagna - Vermaelen - Koscielny - Gibbs is definitely one of the best in the division...... the problem if those guys are out and the likes of Djourou, Squillaci or Jenkinson have to step it, things start to get a little wobblier.

Yeah not that big a fan of Gibbs (I once was though). Strange how left back is our weakest link in defense, especially when that's been a position we've traditionally been solid at.

Baines would be a quality (and affordable) signing for you.

Gibbs - Vermaelen - Koscielny - Sagna
Evra - Evans - Vidic - Jones
Clichy - Lescott - Kompany - Zabaleta
Cole - Terry - Luiz - Ivanovic
Assou-Ekotto - Vertoghen - Kaboul - Walker
Jose Enrique - Agger - Skrtel - Johnson
Baines - Distin - Jagielka - Neville
Santon - Coloccini - Taylor - Simpson

Of the defenses of the top clubs in the Prem, I'd say Arsenal's is somewhere between 4th and 6th. Worse than the Manchesters' and Chelsea's, and similar to Liverpool's and Spurs', but better than Newcastle's and Everton's defenses.

Honestly I put it second after City's (maybe equal second with ours).....

I dont rate Evans and I think Vidic and particularly Evra are on the rapid decline and Jones shouldnt play RB, and frankly these days I would take Vermaelen and Kos over Terry and Luiz.....

Of course their backup defenders are worse than all of those other clubs backup defenders.

ewww....he's an Englishman!! :)

He'd be awfully expensive, no? In the range of 15-20million pounds?

Everton would take 15, and that's not particularly expensive these days. Would be a good way to reinvest the Song money if you ask me.

It's clearly better than the Tottenham and Liverpool defenses...... that Tottenham one I admit has potential, but it still has a long way to go, and I still cant believe that some people still havent worked out that none of Skrtl, Agger or Johnson is actually particularly good.

Koscielny isn't that good either. And Vermaelen has clear flaws. Skrtel's high-profile error put him in the limelight, but both he and Agger are good, Johnson not so much, nor Enrique, though, so sure, Liverpool are worse, but not by much.

I disagree, I rate Vermaelen and Koscielny a lot higher than you it seems and Skrtel and Agger a lot lower....... honestly though, I have watched plenty of Liverpool matches in the last couple of years and I have this opinion of Skrtel week in, week out and for a long long time before that major error last weekend.
