Cavani has been like the closest thing to God for a couple of FM versions now.

It was since the 11.3 winter update. He wasn't that great in the original FM11 database.

I think my favorite managerial change in FM has been Guardiola to Spanish NT and Ancelotti to Barcelona as his replacement. He immediately implemented his 4-1-2-1-2 diamond which I thought was really hilarious. In his first season he continued Barca's domination of the Spanish league and even got them back to the CL final (where they lost, but still, Pep hadn't managed it since they won the thing). I started thinking maybe Carlo to Barca might not be as a ridiculous as I first thought, and then I see this:

Sure, Xavi is 37 and close to retirement, but still. The man has been the captain for 4 years, is still going strong (27 league apps last season (although on close inspection I see that figure is actually 11 (25) total apps)), and is on 598 league appearances for the club, and you're going to pull that **** on him? Carlo's got balls.

I obviously made an offer for Xavi, just for the fun of it, he won't play for me, but I always liked Xavi and didn't get to use him at the NT because there were too many good playmakers to ask him to step out of retirement. Could tutor some young guns, I suppose, and I'll try to get him to take a staff role. Assuming I sign him, of course.

haha true with Raul I got on a free transfer and convinced him he would be a good coach. Became Assistant manager on my 1860 file and he knew how to motivate the boys. I'm considering bringing him to my Malaga save question is will he want to join malaga I mean I just beat Real Madrid 5-1. (H)

btw my first lost of the season came on against Rayo 1-0 at home :-(

Yeah, I love getting players as coaches. Got Lampard as an NT coach, also gave him the Olympic team when I was in charge of Spain, I think they won too. Got Terry and Ivanovic on player/ staff roles, and did the same with Drogba until he retired and he was quickly approached by PSG and has managed them since. I was strangely very proud when that happened, and when I faced PSG last season I imagined the two of us getting our wine on after the match.

Did you know you can compare stats from two different matches in the Fixtures tab? I'm not sure how to use it yet, but it's still pretty cool.

This was weird. I'm 1-0 up and I turn around to watch TV for a sec and when I look at the screen again, I see Lukaku scoring, but the game says he's scored twice uin that period. I try and watch his 1st goal, which I missed entirely, and see that it doesn't show up in the match bar, nor will it play when I click on the goal in the match screen. That's odd. Even odder was substituting Lukaku for Sturridge, and see Sturridge score with the referee curiously positioned. Watching the replay I realise that it's Lukaku, who, I can only imagine, refused to leave the pitch without scoring a hat-trick. That's him chilling in the penalty box up there.

Yeah, done that for me while going to the tactics screen to make changes before.

Fixture congestion ftw (H)

This is quite a pleasing achievement If I dare say so, considering both Rangers and Celtic are able to spend between £10-15m on players and on top of that, over £30m a year wages. No transfer budget for me unless I sell players and a wage bill of £2m a season, all I can say is...

The place, the legendary Marcana stadium at Rio de Janeiro, the time, July 13th 2014, the event, the World Cup Final.

England find themselves in the finals, facing dark horse Belgium, both sides have battled to reach this stage, and both want it above everything else. In the 6th minute, captain John Terry finds himself unmarked at the far post and heads the ball in beyond the helpless Thibault Courtois. England press hard and create chance after chance but a defensive unit comprised of Vermalaen, Kompany and Vertonghen as well as a stellar performance from Courtois keep the underdogs in the picture.

With less than 10 minutes to go, De Bruyne threads the ball to Witsel on the right, he crosses it quickly towards the penalty spot where Fellaini rushes from the edge of the area, rises high above everyone and heads it towards goal. Robert Green stretches as far as his body will take him but is helpless as the ball flies past his outstretched hands, and HITS THE CROSSBAR! Cahill tries to clear the ball but Hazard has nipped in first and he pokes the ball into the net, 1-1, and Belgium dream.

England keep trying but eventual MoM Courtois keeps them out, and the 90 minutes are up. In extra time, the games become much more open, with Belgium believing in miracles and England facing an impenetrable wall at the other end. As the clocks ticks away, the digits reading 120 an counting, Courtois takes as long as he can with the goalkick, finaklly hooving it towards Romelu Lukaku who beats Cahill for the header, leaving Hazard with 1 on 1 with Green. Hazard runs at Green and attempts to round him but finds himself running out space and passes the ball back to Lukaku, who arrives at the penalty spot with Cahil just a hair in front of him. Cahill tries to clear but Lukaku wins the ball and shoots, Green beaten, to give the victory to Belgium, as thousands of fans cheer around the Marcana stadium... but the ball's cleared off the line! It's John Terry! Terry saves England and it's gone to penalties!

Belgium look confident now. They know they have the better keeper and than the World Cup is at arm's reach. Jagielka steps up, and scores. Witsel mimics him, also hitting the ball high and finding the top, right corner. Baines and Nainggolan both score, but tragedy strikes, as James Milner's penalty is punched away by Courtois, while his club teammate Kompany deftly hits his to give Belgium the advantage as the stadium roars yet again. Glen Johnson and Fellaini both tuck their kicks away, and it comes down to Gerrard and Vermalaen. If Gerrard misses or the Verminator scores, it's a 1st World Cup victory for Belgium.

Gerrard steps up, puts the ball in place, takes a few steps back, kicks it... it's in! It's Vermalaen's turn and knows what a single kick can achieve. He approaches the ball calmly, hits it.. and Green parries it away! Green keeps England in business! Young and Ogunjimi both score and it's now down to Odoi and Terry. This is what happend:

The man is cursed! Odoi obviously scored and Belgium won. Despite scoring the breakthrough goal and clearing off the line in the final kick of the game, Terry's the villain again, and after the match stepped down as captain, having failed to score when it really counted (he scored with all the WAGs, which countes less).

The place, the Gazprom-Arena, the time, July 15th 2018, the event, the World Cup Final.

In their white shirts, England come to St. Petersburg having escaped one of the tougher Groups, beating Morocco and Confederations Cup finalist Mexico before drawing with Holland with the group already won. A second round 3-1 win over Croatia allowed them to progress to the easiest Quarterfinal, a match dubbed "The Battle of Long Island, that took place in Russia too, right?", where they saw off U.S of America with another 3-1 victory, which raised doubts over starting keeper Joe Hart's ability to defend the posts at this level. The semifinal pitted the tournament's best offense against the best defense, with England facing '0-goals-conceded' Brazil. A brilliant performance from Hart and a marvellous display of tactical nous allowed England to thrash Brazil 4-0 and claim their spot in the final.

On the other side of the pitch, in their trademark red, black and yellow, Belgium (not Germany, Angola, Uganda and I dunno, Zimbabwe?) were ready for another tussle with their newfound rival. Belgium headed into their second straight World Cup final, emerging unscathed from a group containing Cameroon, Ukraine and the U.S.A. They proceeded to thrash Nigeria 3-0 and dominate Holland for an unflattering 2-0 result that saw them enter the Final Four paired against the uncomprehensible-because-their-tactics-suck favourite Argentina. The reigning World Champions dispatched Messi and co. with a 2-1 win.

The animosity between these two sides is palpable. Two years prior, England edged a 1-0 victory over Belgium in the European Championship final, claiming a fantastic victory, England's first trophy in international competition in exactly 50 years. The victory, a hard-fought victory also exacted revenge on their opponents, who had defied the odds in the previous World Cup Final, and defeated England via penalty shoot-out.

The two sides somehow avoided facing each other in this very stadium just a year ago, when England thrashed Mexico to win the Confederations Cup, Belgium having crashed out in the previous round to the red-white-and-green nation (that isn't Italy, Wales, Algeria, Burundi, Palestine, Oman and of course Tajikistan).

Both sides came into this match with casualties. 2-time Golden Ball Winner Eden Hazard was injured in the semi-final for Belgium, just like he missed the final in France 2 years ago. On the English side, back-up LB Leighton Baines' World Cup campaign ended in the Second Round, and 37-year-old postponed-his-retirement-to-participate ex-captain John Terry missed the semis, ending his international career on a high having scored twice against Croatia to get England to the Quarters. Belgium entered the match with their usual 4-2-3-1 as expected, but England featured 2 surprise inclusions in their attacking 4-4-2, with most-capped-player-in-Europe Wayne Rooney dropped for surprise packaged Danny Palmer and star winger Albrighton replaced by Chamberlain, who earned his first call-up as a member of the provisional squad and impressed the England manager enough to merit inclusion.

The match started brightly, with England dominating the early exchanges, but failing to find a way through the wall that is Courtois. Time after time their quick breaks down the flanks saw no end result as Thibault denied 130 international goals Sturridge and the tournament's top scorer Danny Palmer a goal. Gradually, Belgium started getting into the game, with part-man-part-behemoth Romelu Lukaku leading the line impressively and De Bruyne constantly skinning both of England's fullbacks to set-up good chances for his teammates, but Hart was having a good day as well, and the first half ended goalless despite an open and exciting match.

In the second half Belgium set out with a more defensive formation, giving away control of the match and allowing England to dictate possession, but continuously breaking dangerously on the counter as Courtois continued to keep his side from conceding. Eventually, the pressure was too much, and in the 69th minute Palmer broke away from the last defender before getting shoved off the ball inside the area. The ref pointed to the spot and James Milner stepped up. Milner put the ball on the white dot, turned, took 4 steps back and quickly swivelled on the spot and ran up to the ball, hitting hard and low...

but Courtois parried it! Ashley Young reaches for a follow-up but Courtois punches it behind for a corner. In the remaining 20 minutes of normal time, Belgium will get back into the match, but as the clock ticked to 90, the affair remained goalless, and extra time it would be, for the 3rd consecutive final between the two.

England started extra time looking to put the game to bed and hold out for victory, attacking heavily and barraging Belgium, with the current holders happy to hoof the ball clear or for Lukaku to fight for it. Eventually this approach yielded fruit, with Wayne Rooney controlling a crossfield ball from Kane to run to the near post and lay it back for Palmer to crash high into the net. Belgium didn't wait and immediately gained control of the match, looking for the equaliser.

5 minutes remained, and England were packing men behind the ball and hoping to settle th contest on the counter. In the 116th minute, a Verthongen long-ball gets chested down by Lukaku, who plays a quick 1-2 with De Bruyne and looks to drive at the defense before passing it sideways to Mertens ont he edge of the box, who curls it beautifully towards goal. Hart takes 2 quick steps back and dives... the ball seems to take ages to make its way in an arc, over Hart and into the net. 4 minutes remaining, and wait 'till late to Belgium make it 1-1, just like in Brazil.

With both sides tired and shapeless through forced substitutions which include Wilshere playing at LB, the match was bound for penalties.

First up was Lukaku, who cooly drove the ball high to the left, only for Hart to make an astonishing save. Rooney was next and he set the English's minds at ease by slotting it neatly to the bottom-right corner. Mertens would then wrong-foot Hart and Wilshere would attempt the same but have his shot saved by Courtois. 2 penalties apiece, 1-1. Fellaini was next and he tried to power it in only for Hart to parry it to the post and away. Milner would then step up, ready for his 2nd penalty of the night. Courtois tries to put James off, who doesn't take his eyes off the ball this time. He runs up in long strides... 1... 2... 3... GOAL! Milner scores! Advantage England. Next up were Vermelaen and Young, who both slotted their spotkicks in. So it was all down to Kompany. The Belgium captain knew what not to do. He had seen his counterpart Terry smash the ball into the bar 4 years prior.

He set the ball on the spot, breathed in, took a few steps back, jogged back towards the ball...

and scuffed it high. England win their 2nd World Cup, their first in over 50 years, their 3rd straight international title.

To sum up, that's 3 major, consecutive finals between Belgium and England. 3 times they went to extra time, two consecutive World Cup Finals in which England lead, Belgium tie, Courtois gets man of the match which goes to penalties, and yes, two consecutive WC finals in which the losing side's captain hits it too hard.

This is the single greatest story I've ever witnesses in an FM save, made even sweeter when you consider that Terry, who led England and nearly won them the WC before missing the penalty kick (in the same manner he missed the CL final kick in Moscow), and who got dropped by Pearce for the Euro victory, retired after this tournament, finally getting a taste of true World Cup glory.

It would be more interesting if I didn't know that the only reason these teams are so successful is because you Carlos*ed up the PAs of all the Chelsea players.

Doesn't really change the awesome narrative the game created.

Oh, and I didn't just change Chelsea's PAs, I go through the database with every game and change it to my liking.
