I'll pose to you a simple question: do I have the right to bring my own alcohol into the stadium?

Hopefully as you explore this question you'll arrive at the answer as to why vuvuzelas can be banned at games for a month.

Points to consider:

1) Football fans do all kinds of silly things everywhere in the world. Most of these, however, would never be seriously described as "deeply rooted into cultural traditions".

2) One of the reasons why political correctness sucks is that it makes a caricature of whatever it appears to be standing for. The liberal usage of "culture", "bigot" and "racist" in this discussion makes a good example.

3) It is an easily verifiable fact that a large fraction of TV spectators and players do find the sound of the horns annoying. And as far as I am aware sensory perception is not subject to moral judgement.

4) Stadium-goers, on the other hand, do not seem to be bothered - and indeed there were horn blowers to be seen among the fans of pretty much all countries.

5) One sensible rationale for not banning the horns is that doing so would cause, from the WC organizers' point of view, more distress than the current situation. No moral or cultural issues need to be involved at all.

What does that alcohol have to do with noise makers,vuvuzuelas or the horns or whatever was used in japan n korea at the WC2002?? Vuvuzuelas are part of popular culture in South Africa where the WC is being held ,they are also used in PSL games so it is not like they started using them just for the world cup,alcohol is non starter as an argument because it is not specific to South Africa and has no importance in this matter.

You said that "They have a right to blow a vuvuzela at a football game!" explicitly stating that there is some sort of "right" to bring a vuvuzela into a stadium and blow it. While there is certainly a right to blow a vuvuzela in your own home, or in the streets at most times, there is absolutely no right to do it in the stadium. Outside booze is banned at every stadium I've ever been too, but I likewise have a right to drink whatever I want at my home, or in a public bar. Just because you have the right to do something in most places does NOT that you similarly retain that right when you enter a privately owned stadium.

It's no secret that 85% of the people watching the WC hate these long-ass trumpets. I would love to hear some chants and drums but instead I always need to tone down my TV...Jeez...

Am I the only one not really enjoying the WC so far? I'm finding it really hard no to fall asleep when watching some matches...luckily Forlan took care of that last night.

the fact is that everyone and there grandpa seems to be blowing the bloody things. Would make more sense if it was just the African nations using the vuvuzela for when they played.
