Former football star John Hartson has been diagnosed with brain cancer, The Sun can reveal.

John, 34, was given the devastating news after he went into hospital with splitting headaches.

The ex-Wales, Arsenal, West Ham and Celtic striker is believed to be starting chemotherapy today - and has told family and friends he is ready for the biggest fight of his life.

A close friend said last night: "If anyone can beat this, big John can."


John - a pundit on collapsed sports channel Setanta after he quit football last year - went to Singleton Hospital in Swansea, Wales, on Friday.

He had been suffering severe headaches.

John's family remained by his side all weekend while doctors ran a series of tests. Yesterday they told John he was suffering from testicular cancer - and that the disease had spread to his brain.

A pal said: "John had complained of really bad headaches recently.

"It reached the stage where he felt something was seriously wrong.

"It's devastating news for John and his family. His father is at his bedside and worried sick. But the doctors are upbeat about his prospects and chemotherapy will begin right away. John is a big, strong man.

"Throughout his career he was a battler - he'll fight this with everything he's got."

I didn't much care for Hartson after his vicious attack on Eyal Berkovic, but I have to say that I'm pulling for him on this, no-one deserves Cancer - it's just evil.

Hope he fights it off.

Celtic have offered to support John Hartson in any way they can as the former striker battles cancer.

The 34-year-old has been diagnosed with testicular cancer which has now spread to his brain.

He was given the news at the weekend having undergone tests at Singleton Hospital after complaining of suffering with severe headaches.

"Mr Hartson attended Singleton Hospital on Friday (10 July) displaying symptoms consistent with testicular cancer," Dr Gianfilippo Bertelli, consultant medical oncologist for Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University NHS Trust, said.

"A number of clinical tests were put in place and these have confirmed the presence of testicular cancer. Unfortunately, it has also been confirmed that this cancer has spread to Mr Hartson's brain.

"We are awaiting the results of further tests to establish a full picture of Mr Hartson's diagnosis.

"We will be commencing a course of radiotherapy and chemotherapy as soon as possible and foresee many months of treatment.

"We realise that Mr Hartson is a much-loved figure and there are many fans and well-wishers who will be keen to hear news of his progress.

"However, while treatment is ongoing we would ask that the privacy of Mr Hartson, and all the patients who attend our hospital, is respected."

Started off as Testicular and spread to his brain, just goes to show that you should check down below regularly. That's a real rare spread too, I wonder how far gone it was before he got the headaches.

Yeah spread to his lungs now too, sounds like he's on the way out. Cancer is ******* terrifying. I can't imagine what he must be going through at the moment.
