Would you cheer for another club from your country in Europe if your team was out?

Listening to a debate about this on the radio prior to the UCL Final, and also listening to non United fans p*ssing themselves with delight the day after we lost, it raises the question:

If your own team was out of contention in Europe, would you support / cheer for another team from your country for patriotic reasons?

I'll admit I wouldn't. My blood runs cold at the thought of Liverpool, Arsenal or Chelsea winning the European Cup - or City winning the Europa League (Which they aren't in) I also get annoyed with the way fans jump on our backs when we get to a final, when they wish disaster on us practically every other week.

I would always want them (English rivals) to lose, and ironically Barcelona is always my second choice behind United (Although not this year - obviously I was not happy with that one)

No, but it might be different if I actually lived in Germany. Once Bayern get knocked out I'll cheer for which ever team I like best, and don't care where they're from. Usually not Germany.

Living in England, I would hate to see manure, liverpool, chelski win it. But, since I've moved to the US, it's a lot more important to be patriotic as any English endeavors are related to me according to those around me.

Yes, I do, because we need the seeding points. Also because good results in European competitions would set Norwegian soccer on the map and make it more attractive. If my team was from Spain, England, Italy or some other country with a lot of seeding points, then I wouldn't cheer for them.

always if the team isnt real madrid, i love to see him losing even in the friendly matches.

French Touch
Oh no, I can't support other French teams in Europe, even if France can lose some UEFA points! Marseille is the only club which have won CL here, I guess I don't wanna see another French team lifting up the Champions League trophy!

OK, a French team winning CL looks like utopy..

I wasn't thinking of that, but it's a good point. In FM when I manage in Romania or Ukraine I always cheer for rivals in Europe.

I don't live in England, and when Chelsea's out, I'd rather its rivals fail as well. I'd cheer Israeli teams, but they're taking a break from success for now and until now. I didn't cheer for anyone in the final, for example, was just contented that Chelsea were defeated by the champs.

I'd cheer Pool though, if Benayoun was playing.

Fan Favourite
It's a much different situation, if you're not a fan of a team from your own country, as some have pointed out. I don't think I could cheer for any Spanish team, but there are few that I wouldn't really hope to lose (Sevilla, Valencia). In Finland, well, if someone could get there, I would cheer for them. I don't follow Finnish football (because it sucks) and therefore I don't even have a favorite team here.

^^This.

I remember feeling actually pretty gutted when PSV and AZ were defeated, in the CL and UEFA Cup semi final respectively, in a very cruel last minute way a couple of years ago.
When we play them in the competition I hate them though. :)

Personally I think people take these things too seriously. Although I'm a avid fan and it hurts when we lose i'm not going to lose any sleep over it. United beat by Barca big deal. England kicked out the world cup for the 'nth' time, I'll get over it.

I never understood these people who literally cry. There more important things to be worrying about then your club getting though to the next stage of a 'game'.

So yeah, if my team gets kicked out I have no issue in supporting a rival team. In fact I even cheered on Liverpool that year when they won the champions league. I thought it was a great achievement for British football.

On the other hand I don't think I could support a team not from the UK. What i tend to do then is support the underdog or the opposite team to the one that kicked us out :D

If england gets kicked out and the other home nations I tend to support which ever team has united players.

people are different dude, and react differently to different situations.
I for one don't usually cry for Porto (ok, some tears of joy every now and then :innocent_smile_1:) but for example I was at the Dragão when we got eliminated by ManU this year and I couldn't keep myself from being absolutely devastated by the outcome of the match. I was so pissed I didn't even have the heart to cry dude, still that don't mean it didn't hurt too damn much.

I simply love Porto as a whole, the town itself and its people, and the club is representantive of the town everytime we play abroad...so I don't know maybe it's more than supporting the club in my case, the name of the city where I was born, raised and still embrace every day is also at stake.

Also, the 'game' is ******* beautiful!

about the topic itself I had to go with the second option although truth is I don't mind if Sporting do well in Europe, but when it comes to Benfica I just can't help wishing them to fail miserably.

They're always against us....and by they I mean any and all other clubs' fans. They cheer for us to lose, just like I cheer for them(their clubs) to lose. If Liverpool was out, I would still follow(watch) the competition, but with less enthusiasm. I really wouldn't be too concerned which team made it through, as long as I'm entertained. I just love European nights and that's what makes me follow the games.

Would I cheer for another team? Any team?
There isn't a chance in ****ing hell that I would cheer for another ****ing team!!!
NO!!! Option 3.

If they're not Liverpool, I don't give 2 ***** about how badly they lose or whatever other crucial ****ing matchday decisions they have to make. The worse form they are in, going into the European game, the better.
Quite frankly I simply hate the majority of all other clubs.....it used to be that I NEVER watched any other club but LFC. There's different levels of hate(United being at the ****ing top of the list) but, in general, I simply cannot ****ing stand any other clubs in general.

I mostly celebrate my national clubs if they do well in Champions League. If they compete with my local team(Well It is impossible lol because my local team hasn't reached to the middle of the table yet)then I support my local team. But even my local team lose, I hope them to do a good effort. So I am happy whatever other team in my country do well in Champions League.

This worked when I lived in Europe too.

I usually have a favored team in every country I said favored not favorite if they win or lose it doesn't matter to me but if they win I like it well enough...then there are the untouchables; teams I hate regardless of anything...I favor liverpool and
AC Milan for example...as far as Spain Is concerned I support most Spanish teams except for barca, Or Valencia other than that is all good
