What Do You Despise About Your Major?

Starting XI
I think having such a thread is an interesting idea..
Anyway, I'm 2 semesters away from graduating with an MS in computer science and I realized that I'm f*cking hating it more by the day.
Pros:
- Uni is top 5 in the US and apparently where you graduated from helps on your resume
- CS degree generally lands you a well-paying job
- Assistantships pay pretty well I guess (at least better than other departments)
- That's about it really..

Cons:
- It's not really my passion. I'm into music composition and production but somehow got persuaded out of pursuing a degree in that field.
- Arrogant and incredibly annoying CS students who act like they're the Einsteins of the future
- So many of those know-it-alls. You develop this skill of recognizing them
- Classes generally get interrupted every minute or 2 because of some know-it-all who has to add/correct something that nobody cares about
- Classes generally consist of 25 guys and 5 girls from which 3 can be mistaken for guys
- Knowing that more than 90% of the class has a 3.8 GPA or more
- Your CS friends barely go out
- Most research problems never get implemented anyway. So you end up solving something of zero practical use.
- Can't those people in CS act f*cking normal
- Many classes are very disorganized
- So many nontrivial assignments and homework that will keep you up till 5 in the morning
- Procrastination doesn't work anymore
- I HATE CS!

meh.. :(

Change your major.

I had engineering last semester but I couldn't do it, partly because I don't like it.

Business all the way!

I'm 4 semesters, some prelim exams and a dissertation away from graduating with a PhD in Political Science.

Pros:
- Uni is top 25 in the US and apparently where you graduated from helps on your resume
- A PhD generally lands you a decent-paying job with a massive amount of time off (a rarity in the US)
- Assistantship + fellowship pays pretty well I guess (can't say that I'm starving)
- That's about it really

Cons:
- It's not really my passion. I'm into creative writing/screenwriting but decided I'm not talented enough to pursue a degree in that field.
- Arrogant PS students who try to turn seminars into intellectual pissing contests
- Several of those know-it-alls. You develop this skill of recognizing them
- Seminars generally get interrupted every minute or 2 because of some know-it-all who has to add/correct something that nobody cares about
- Seminars generally consist of 12 guys and 3 women, and 2 of them are married
- Knowing that more than 90% of the class takes this more seriously than I do
- My PS friends barely go out, but actually that doesn't bother me because I'm not very social
- A lot of dry and boring readings required that will keep you up till 5 in the morning
- Procrastination doesn't work anymore
- Procrastination doesn't work anymore

I don't know... I'm actually doing much better this semester than I was doing last. Unfortunately, I put myself in a hole by taking a couple of incompletes from last semester.

night, you've got to stick it out, man. This is too good of an opportunity to pass up. Get your CS degree, and then pursue your dreams. If your dreams don't materialize, you'll have a lucrative career to fall back on. You've only got a year left, I've got 4-5 if I go all the way.

haha, you really made me 'cold' about Computer Sciences.
.

I'm not saying it's bad or anything. CS has its own people but I don't see myself doing that for life due to the fact that my passion and talent is in something else :)

Biomedical Engineer third year, last year before concentration @ Universidade Coimbra, Portugal

Pros:
- Best university in Portugal (in historical means)
- It's a course with a great future, it's very recent and with great chances of getting employed as soon as I graduate.
- Great fellowship between some people (others that are not I tend to ignore)
- Best academic week in Portugal, and maybe in Europe (also known as Queima das Fitas)
- Some very interesting lectures.
- PARTYYYYYYYYY
Cons:
- It's not totally my passion, even though I really enjoy it. I would like to take a post-graduation in something related with journalism, or creative writing, dunno.
- Ranked the 5th most difficult course in Portugal.
- The teachers really **** you up. They really do.
- Some lectures that are so hard that I don't even know how I will do them (Physics Quantics, or Calculus III)
- Even though it's the best univ in Portugal, it is really starting to fall behind some new ones that use technology at their full potential.

Well, I'm satisfied in overall. Don't forget university here in Europe is quite different than the US. I'm planning of going into the Bioprogramming concentration, or the Neurosciences concentration. Still thinking.

Well I finished my BA Global, with two majors, International and European Studies, and now I'm doing Honours in just European Studies.

What a waste INT was man, just full of the randomness that was globalization. With European Studies I'm able to focus on more interesting topics and one's that I actually enjoy reading about. I'm writing my thesis on economic integration in South/Latin America.

EDIT: Ah, I see that you guys are talking about Masters. Well after I finish my Honours year, without completely blowing it, I'll have the choice to do either Masters or go straight to PhD. Masters is just Coursework for 3 years and the PhD is just a straight thesis for 3/4 years.

Mate, finsih your MS, you have gone through a lot so make sure get the degree !!

And yeah I know how it feels...especially about the girls. At one point there were only 2 girls in my class one of which looked like someone had hit her face with those thick computer science books for atleast a year :(

To make it worse, the other girl was ridiculously hot !

Oh and I do love CS...especially when you see how its applied.

^^ haha keep it up mate..

I have a major in Electrical engineering... but have started to loose all interest and have fallen into the world of Financial investing and Economics. I find myself always reading and listening to all that is related to Wallstreet. Hopefully I can turn it from a hobby to a work-at-home career sooner rather than later, eventually working from my favorite vacation spot 3000 miles away. I tried it for a brief time and found it that it came so natural to me, which sort of surprise me.

I actually realized that so many people are actually pursuing degrees not related to what they really like to do only because those degrees are more safe than their passion.

I really second that. I have a friend that's in my degree, and even though he likes it, what he really likes is Business and Economical Analysis. But Portugal is already full of them, and Biomedicals not.

It was really a "chance of getting a job" choice.

3 Semesters away from graduating with a Bachelor's in Accounting .

Pros:
-demand for accountants is high
-well paid (depends on what kind of accounting)
-fairly easy (for me at least)
-very attractive girls for most of my accounting classes so far.
-classes take place in the business building where most attractive girls can be found anyway (the only other major that tops business is Psychology)

Cons:
-It's not my passion. Masturbating is, but they had no degree for that when I signed up.
-classes are overfilled because it's apparently a popular choice, if you don't sign up the first hour that registration window opens, you're f*cked.

I don't think it's considered a major once you enter grad school.

Cons:

The whole thing, law is horrible and the economy is worse.

3 semesters away from a JD by the way. Then I go from fudgepacker brown to ESQUIRE.

Red Card - Life

My first real passion was Drama, went against it because of the instability.

My other passion is English Literature, can't do it because England is expensive.

I'm just going to be emo.

Few months away from getting my Bachelor of Kinesiology/Gym. Applied to U of T again to do my Masters in Physiotherapy, fingers crossed.

Pros: hot chicks, good parties, we actually have gym classes
Cons: almost impossible to get a job with the degree alone, HAVE to go into something else

Interesting topic.

Let's see,....... 4 years at Yale majoring in political science and I still have that occassional tinge of regret for not pursuing my first love which is English Literature and philosophy. There is a certain mechanical rigidity about studying politics. Everything feels a little structured. haha... Oh well...everything for a reason I guess. :)
