Frazier's got electric pace man. What an asset. Simpson played well too. I hope he doesnt have to go on loan. We are well covered in defence. But in midfield especially the wings we lack quality cover.

I was there, and here's the report and photos. A very emotional day.

Having set off from sunny Hampshire at 9:30 we expected to be up there in time to see the pre match festivities and have a quick look in the megastore. However the M6 motorway and Manchester Police conspired to rob us of the extra hour and we were climbing the stairs to the seating as Ole came out holding our European Cup (we saw it on the monitors)

United fielded a strong looking side and we welcomed Nani, Edwin and Patrice back from their holidays - Tevez was partnered by Giggs and Fletcher, Scholes and Darren Gibson joined Nani in midfield. The backline featured Rio and Nemanja, Silvestre and young Danny Simpson.

Espanyol clearly weren't intending to be thrown to the lions at Ole's party and they showed some good and aggressive football. On one occasion Tevez was fouled and squared up to his opponent, but as the ref walked over he fell backwards onto his backside again! Scholes had our hearts in our mouths with his usual tackling prowess (booked) and was encouraged by the 68,000 to "shoooot!" any time the ball came to him (even on one occasion in the centre circle facing away from goal - which brought some laughter from us) His passing again though was sublime, you just wouldn't believe how effortless he makes it look!

In the interval we were delighted to see Teddy Sheringham return to Old Trafford and in addition to praising Ole, announce his own retirement (which wasn't so nice)

The second half action seemed almost incidental as the 68,000 pairs of eyes in the stadium fell on the dugout as we waited for the man of the hour to emerge. Even a trot down the line ramped the already vociferous Stretford End's volume to insane levels. Then as so often was the case - Ole entered the battlefield with some 20 minutes remaining.

And as so often was the case, he stole the show. He was first to every ball, made every run and flicked on Fraizer Campbell to run through and expertly dink the ball over the keeper for the winner.

Ole lined up a freekick that was tipped over the bar, clearly the Espanyol goalkeeper hadn't read the script! He was jeered by the Stretford End and Ole good naturedly had a quick "chat" with him. Spare a thought also for the poor guy who nicked the ball off Ole and was greeted with 68,000 voices howling their displeasure. I almost swear I saw him thinking "what did I do?"

It was an honour and a privilege to witness this public "thank you" to a true United (and indeed, Football - Legend) Ole emotionally thanked everyone and made one last lap of the Old Trafford stadium with his children before receiving a guard of honour down the tunnel.

Also interesting to note the Stretford End ran through every player's chant/song whether they were playing or not. All that is except one......

Not one of them mentioned Cristiano Ronaldo.

One note before the pics. In the megastore after the game (that was jammed) I saw an old lady with a United shirt on - and printed on that shirt was "Nanny #17". Just class!

United line up (and no, I didn't know Scholes was scratching his ass!)

Couldn't put it better

Nani lit the place up

Teddy Sheringham

Giggsy lines up a corner

"Old Trafford, Manchester United substitution: Replacing number thirty two Carlos Tevez ... Number Twenty - OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER!!

Ole's first touch - naturally a pinpoint pass

Now, I wonder who should take this kick?

A final thank you.

Just wanted to sstep in here and give my 2 cents by Ole. First off, Im a madrid supporter as many know, but I am a football fan nontheless and I wanted to acknowledge Ole! He is a throwback to the good ol days where players played for the fun of it and respected the club. He's been such a great team player with amazing work ethic and unselfishness. I wish there were more guys like this in football instead of the overpaid crybabies who moan and b!tch about everything! Ole is a perfect example of what a football playter should be. Football will miss him. Thank you Ole! Carry on.

Great pics and description Mikey! Thanks.
Simpson has gone out on Loan to Blackburn for a year which isn't such a bad move since he's staying in the Premiership.

The Legend
Even as an Arsenal fan I always liked Solskjær. He and Kanu are a like in that they do alot of hard work but they don't even boast about it, the real football fans notice though, and it's something that transcends the team you support, it's about appreciating a player who knows and respects the game.

He stands in stark contrast to today's Billionaire Boy's Club. I wish more young players would seek to emulate players like Solskjær, Brian McBride and the like. It's sad they they don't get the headlines.

The reason why they don't get much headlines(aside from footballing reasons)is because they are people who have their feet firmly on the ground.

i went off on some rant about pre-madonna's but i could care less about them or their immature drama. I'm posting in honor of one of the greats of football.

My favourite player of all time btw.
There are just too many great moments.
Has anyone ever seen the "Tribute To Ole" on the UTD season review 08?
I really really liked what he said. Especially about his team mates and his own highs.

Every time Ole gives an interview, he drives home what a legend he is - not by saying "I'm a legend" but by the humble things he says and the thanks he gives. I'll say again, it was an honour and a privilege to watch him in that red shirt one last time.

In contrast, looks like Slave is not returning to United today as agreed. :(

But I'm ending on a positive, did you see the Da Silva twins play against Peterborough last night? What players they look! Rafael in particular was brilliant in his United debut.

Gibson scored a stunner as well, 30 yards out.

Rooney's out of the Newcastle game :nape: Apparently Sir Alex has just confirmed this according to the BBC - His virus is particularly nasty.

I think we're going to have to ask FIFA to release Anderson from the Olympics - If Barca can keep Messi, why can't we keep Ando?

Giggsy and Tevez to start then? or will Fergie give Fraizer Cambell the chance. We need at least one striker, and probably another winger too.

EDIT: Confirmed about Rooney.

Messi will be playing at the Olympics. I'm certain of that.

Shame bout Rooney, but I hope this teaches the clubs not to go to some tour around the world where our players can get a virus. Why can't we just tour Portugal or Austria instead?

anyway, got this song off red issue, made me laugh out loud.

Viva da Silvas,
Viva da Silvas,
Got a lovely perm,
Born from the same sperm,
Viva da Silvas

Do you guys reckon our lack in the trasnfer market could hurt our start of the season. No Rooney, Ronaldo, Hargreaves, Carrick, Anderson for the start of the season makes our attack look very very thin. We haven't really bought anybody to strengthen the squad and from past experiences whenever a team isn't very active in the transfer window they usually struggle in the season. Fresh faces bring new hunger and competition and so far Chelsea look very very hungry.
