North American Soccer 2008

Today, the city announced that they own the stadium and the bank owns the actual team. I don't know if the bank will be cool with this and I'm sure they will try to fight it. Me and and bunch of other people went to lunch with Soccer Sam, who is the leader of the local group of owners. He had a lot to say to us, a lot I can't really say to the public. The league has promised all the league owners that everything will be resolved one way or another March 12, which is a month before the league begins.

Also there are now rumors that another investor, actually we think its a family owned bank, who might want to buy the team.

Hahahahahaha... did anyone watch the Olympic qualifiers tonight? I really wish I had, but I could only follow them on BigSoccer. Oh man... is Hugo Sanchez toast or what?

Remember all the nagging and bitching Hugo made until he got the job? Well, his wish came true, and all he can do now is put his tail between his legs and kiss his ass goodbye. We have nothing left but the memories, which include:

-Two losses and a draw to the real superpower in CONCACAF, the mighty US and A
-Blowing a lead in the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup last summer
-Failing to make it out of the group in Olympic qualifying

In other words: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

CONCACAF Champions Cup

Harbour View 1:1 DC United
DC United 5:0 Harbour View

DC United advance, 6:1 on aggregate.

Fred was MOTM easily, he was everywhere on the field and had a hand in three of the five goals. I feel kinda bad for Harbour View. They didn't play that poorly. They defended well in the first half, but pushed too far up the field after falling behind, and that really cost them. I still think some MLS team should give Fabian Taylor another chance.

CSD Municipal 0:0 Houston Dynamo
Houston Dynamo 3:1 CSD Municipal

Houston advance 3:1 on aggregate.

I think both DC United and Houston played well considering they're in pre-season form, but they'll really need to step up their game for the next round. Boswell appears to be the weak link in Houston's defense... hard to believe he was MLS defender of the year a couple of seasons ago.

(H) We wish. I was hoping he had the dignity (obviously he has none) to say he was stepping down after his dissaster the the youngens, but it's just too much to ask for hEGO, himself.

The only concrete candidate I've heard of: Carlos Bianchi

Then again we have Jesus "Chucho" Ramirez who is my choice but I doubt the morons in charge of the federation would give continuation to the person who is the most indicated to take charge. There are many who think he isn't ready at this moment and that instead would take over the NT in 2010 when all his World Champions would be in the prime of their career which is not a bad idea, but why not get him started now?

Hugo Sanchez, thanks for not qualifying us to the '09 Confederations Cup and the '08 Olympics with arguably the most talented team since EVER. Thanks for nothing P-E-N-D-E-J-O!!

Olympic qualifying:

Honduras 0-0 Guatemala, 6-5 after penalties
USA 3-0 Canada

Not much separating the Chapines and the Catarachos in the first match. The US-Canada game, in contrast, was very one-sided. Good performance from the US, easily the best of the tournament.

Player grades:

Seitz - N/A (could have taken a nap)

Sturgis - 7 (comfortable on the ball)
Orozco - 7.5 (another solid performance)
Spector - 7 (not as instrumental to our success as anticipated)
Wynne - 7 (terrific strength and pace)

Edu - 6 (unspectacular)
McCarty - 6 (did his job)
Holden - 7 (danger is his middle name)
Kljestan - 5 (despite his goal, probably our worst player tonight)
Adu - 8 (playing on another level)

Altidore - 7 (a handful for the Canadian defense)

With Bradley and three overage players, we should have a pretty good team for the Olympics.

The Alpha Mexican
I'm counting down the hours to HOPEFULLY Hugo Sanchez's last game as Mexico's head coach. (H)

The Mexican press is stupid, they are throwing irrational names around as if we had a chance to hire any of them.

Carlos Bianchi: More of a serious candidate, but he has been nothing but a bust outside of Argentina.

Jose Pekerman: Another serious candidate, dont want him to leave Toluca though. haha He'd be damn good for our young players.

Jose Mourhino: Lets keep dreaming and move on...

Felipe Scolari: He was interested in our job back in Lavolpe took over, so you never know.

Raul Arias: Are the media REALLY throwing his name around??? He hasn't been relevant as a coach since the mid/late 90's. He plays an 8-1-1 formation, God please don't allow this.

Jesus Ramirez: I want him, but not yet. He should be our assistant coach and take over starting right after the 2010 world cup.

Anybody watch any MLS action today? LA still looks absolutely horrible, it's bad for the league that they are this bad but that's what you get when you allow a pot head like Lasas to govern and manage a team. KC looks very good with their new acquisitions, Claudio Lopez is gonna have an Emilio-like season, I definitely see him getting 20 goals, at least, he's class.

You reap what you sow, Alexi. Based on last night, I've the gut feeling that performances like these for the Galaxy will be more the rule than the exception. Other than Becks, Landycakes, and The King of Divers, there is hardly any quality whatsoever. After all, Alan Gordon has proven time and again that he's incapable of being the strike partner for a 1982 Buick Skylark, let alone Carlos Ruiz.

As for the Revs, I couldn't have asked for a better start to the campaign. The Gambians looked flawless, but they need to keep it up through the season, because as we all know, one match does not a season make.

LA looked absolutely dreadful.

Toronto looked as toothless up front as season 1. Could be a long season ahead if more options don't come in.

It also seemed like LA just gave up completely not giving a **** anymore :D ... pretty soft penalty against them though.

A few class goals as always this weekend.
