Political Compass, 2008

Why? I've always been really leftist.

I have to admit, I was a little surprised by your result too, but then again perceptions can be skewed online..

I think we need to remember too that right/left can mean different things in different places. I also wouldn't put much weight into a test like that, I think a lot of people try to fit into a certain mould and then choose their answers accordingly, rather than picking based on how they actually feel or putting real thought into it.

Last time I took this test in 2007 I was -1.28 on the social scale, and a +10 in economics.

And here are some other past results.

Economic Left/Right: 7.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 6.21

Haha, you'd have to be the one to be more leftist than me.

What I love most is that I remain more committed to individual freedom than the so-called 'small government' adherents of the right. I remember doing this in 2004 or whenever Elder used to hang out here and my result caused him much consternation.

Sometimes I secretly miss him being here.

But shinji is right, these tests don't give much other than a general impression of where a person sits in the political scene. And when it comes to actually voting, I tend to vote tactically - basically whatever it takes to keep the right out of government suits me. I like where Australia ended up at the last election. At least our trans-tasman cousins no longer have to suffer the indignity of being the only country on earth to have a fully-fledged card-carrying muppet as their leader.

Pretty good. (Y) Unfortunately, my extreme lack of willingness to follow politics and the news in general, made me have to answer a few questions I must admit I don't know much about.

Yeah Az. Bobby just loves playing a right-wing macho asshole. "The Devil's Advocate", so to speak. (H)

What, still with a conservative government in charge?

A party that has been dragged so far to the right, and a party that is now out 'liberalling' the Liberals on economic issues.

Yeah, sadly I'm forced to vote like that too these days.. even worse is that the choices here in Canada are getting worse with every election. Admittedly the right here isn't as extreme as it is south of the border, but still, any party with some actual progressive ideas has no chance of ever getting into office.

We basically have:

The Conservatives (classic right, if in the US, they'd fall somewhere between the Dems and Republicans on the political scale)

The Liberal Party (campaign on the left but govern on the center-right)

NDP (left, socialist, the only decent party in Canada right now but always finishes a distant third in elections. Although they have a strong presence in BC where people tend to be a little more enlightened)

Green Party (good in principle, but every wealthy right-winger with a composter seems to be turning to them.)

I'm considering not voting at the next national election for the first time since I've been old enough to do so. ...and for the record, we have a muppet too :(

All governments are conservative on economic issues in a post-cold war world. The political battleground is pretty much social issues these days.

Took it again. Moved up 0.21 on the Social Scale. Imagine this graph:

I got liberatarian. Don't really agree with this. If you agree with how politics are run and believe in the government system right now then it's fine but if you think it's corrupt and big political parties are wrong, etc then it's pointless.
