Motherwell captain O'Donnell dies

Tosiek

Słowiańska Dusza
Motherwell captain Phil O'Donnell has died after collapsing towards the end of his side's Scottish Premier League game against Dundee United.
The 35-year-old midfielder fell to the ground just as he was about to be replaced with Marc Fitzpatrick near the end of Motherwell's 5-3 victory.

O'Donnell was treated for around five minutes on the field before being taken to a waiting ambulance.

But his death was later confirmed by Well chairman Bill Dickie.

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee had spoken briefly to the press after the game before going to hospital to find out how the skipper was.

We took Clarkson off because he got a fright from the nature of the collapse

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee

"He's had some sort of collapse," he said.

McGhee said O'Donnell's substitution had been "an absolute coincidence" before his sudden collapse.

"We just felt we would save him a bit for Wednesday," said the manager.

O'Donnell's nephew, David Clarkson, was substituted moments later after scoring two goals in the Scottish Premier League match.

McGhee said: "We took Clarkson off because he got a fright from the nature of the collapse.

"A few of the boys got a fright."

A news conference has been called at Wishaw General Hospital, which will be addressed by chief executive Ian Stillie.

RIP

Sad, but such things would continue to happen, unless the schedule for some tournaments gets offloaded a bit. It's just impossible to play as many games as it is planed. Plus, some clubs doesn't have such a long roster, as the biggest ones does, so there are always players that have to play non stop whole 90 mins.

Was on the way back from our defeat today when someone whose dad is a 'Well fan called them and said Phil O'Donnell collapsed on the pitch. Right away I feared the worst. He'd had a pretty injury prone career, but he always put in a hard shift of running, even at 35 years old. News like this puts this game we all love into perspective... man, I just watched him play 3 weeks ago.

Can't imagine what his family must be feeling. RIP Phil.

I had never heard of Foe or Puerta before their tragic passings, but the fact that Phil was a familiar name to me and that it was on home soil adds to the shock value.

Makes me really depressed to think that unprofessional, thuggish scum like Joey Barton can earn a living from football and waste their career while a model professional in O'Donnell, who above all was a father and an ideal role model to young players, has had his life cut short.

R.I.P Phil, and condolences to all affected by this loss.

I don't want Barton dead (I'm not saying that's what you're saying, by the way), but I know exactly where you're coming from. It's a shame.

I know how you feel. This tragedy being so close to home has really added to the shock.

A lot of people will want Motherwell to continue the excellent season they've been having (which I'm sure is what Phil would like most as a tribute) and I hope they do achieve something now like winning the Cup or getting a high league position. Their next game will be against us in the Scottish, I'm past caring about the garbage of our season anyway.

Awful news.
