Strategic Substitutes

One of the big omissions from previous FIFA games that initially caused me to move to PES was no substitutions being made by the CPU unless it was for an injured player.

In PES the CPU will make subs either for injured players, exhausted players, or for tactical reasons. I'm not sure what the logic in the code used to determine this is, and even if it's good logic but at least it does make changes to the squad.

A huge part of football is the ability to alter your on-field team by making substitutions and so far from what I've heard, yet again FIFA does not make CPU substitutions.

So if the on-field players are not performing well OR a certain player is absolutely exhausted the CPU will not replace him with a fit fresh player.

Is this true or has anyone seen the CPU make tactical (non injury based) subs?

In FIFA07, the only time except injuries when the CPU would make a sub was between the 50th and 70th minute. It is always at that time...

ok. I missed out on playing FIFA 07 because of the so-so reviews it got last year so it's good to hear that at least they do make non-injury subs, even if it's only at certain periods of the game.

Maybe this is slightly realistic then since for the most part I think you'd find most managers give their starting eleven at least and hour to try and make a breakthrough and impose themselves on the game.

I'd like to see better logic here though. For example if a team is winning 4-0 and it's half-time then maybe they would take off their superstar player to save him for upcoming games rather than risking injury in the second half.

Ive been playing FIFA 08 on pc for a couple of days now and I have already played through a whole season and I have noticed about three or four times subs being made right before half time. Once it was Drogba who was subbed off for pizarro as I was winning 4-0 against chelsea with Arsenal. So it does seem like there are tactical substitutions now. Its happened a few times and FIFA 07 never had subs before half time (unless of an injury).

Playing on the 360, I've noticed a lot of the substitutions the AI makes are towards the death, like double and triple substitutions in the last ten minutes.
