Because FIFA is football's answer for USA.

Im just kidding. I think it's because they are boss for UEFA and everyone else. They decide what to do. That's my opinion.

I also completely disagree.

30+ games should decide who is most worthy of a shot at Europe's elite table, not 5 or 6. Simple as that.

I tend to follow the thought of whilst you can fluke a cup win, you can't fluke a title. You can script yourself one Juve style though! :p

Does this effect all confederations or just Europe? Because MLS is not going to be happy.

God forbid they make the FA Cup more meaningful and exciting! Oh no, there could possibly be underdogs in the Champions League! This obviously is dumb because I only support teams like Chelsea, Man Utd, and Barcelona! The worst thing in sports is an unfancied team making an remarkable run and getting rewarded for it!

I'm with Tom on this one (Y) Sounds like a good idea to me. All my arguments for this have already been posted so no reason for me to repeat them.

I'm in favor.

And while we're at it, give the UEFA cup champions a CL berth as well. If they don't take these measures, they should consider changing the name of the competition.

They already get richely rewarded for it by winning the cup and playing European football(mostly). But I want to see the best clubs in the best club competition in the world. Not some obscure club who accidently had a lucky winning streak the previous season.

I agree...i believe that winning the league over 30 games or coming close to it should guarantee CL spots...

I think that if a club wants to play in the CL, it has to ocme up the ranks thorugh its domestic league....In england there 3 (or 4 ) league divisions with the premier league title the highest league honor.

If say a club like Nottingham Forest (with all due respect) decides that it wants to play in the Champions League....wat will they have to do ?

Option A : Climb through the domestic leagues earning promotions and that takes time and good managerial skiils....They have to finish in the top four and on the magical day that they do, they have rightfully imo earned a CL spot

Option B : Just win 6 games in a cup....ok its harder than wat it looks on paper but cmon, i dont think it warrants a right to the Champions League....after all, its the holy grail of European Football.

My point is that if a lower division club wants to play the CL, it first has to earn the right to play in the top domestic league....then it shud finish in the top four...and then, think about CL....its a longer, harder, rougher route to the cup but it is fair.

yea... sevilla have been dominant in UEFA Cup play thus far... this time they step up to Champions League play... The loser (Espanyol) should get the auto spot in UEFA Cup being they came so far...

At the most, FA Cup winners should earn a qualifying spot in the 1st round.

Fair points from both Help and goal_machine, i guess it's a matter of opinion really. I mean for me, a team that wins six tough matches in a row deserve, as champions of the domestic club competition, the ability to go to the Champions League.

I mean, even as it is, the cup would still be three times less important than the league, since three spots would still be up for grabs in the Premier League. For me, i can just IMAGINE the amount of new interest that would happen in the FA Cup, it'd make thrilling viewing.

In Brazil, the winner of the cup qualifies to the Libertadores. Even with all the measures taken to get the best team winning the cup (home and away matches instead of a single match), we've had 2nd division sides playing in our major continental competition and not exactly being destroyed there. Actually, Paulista managed to beat River Plate at home. That said, they don't really add anything to the competition, and lower league Brazilian sides have never managed to get past the first stage (a group stage in Libertadores).

I don't have a definitive opinion on this... but as it is a Champions league, then maybe they should allow the cup winners into it.

I think winning 5-10 games and being rewarded a CL spot is not fair to the teams that fight 30 and above to get one. I mean we all agree that this idea will make the countries cups much more atractive but it will also mean that a team that gets somehow lucky and fights its way through can win a spot. That team can very well be a low lable or worst case scenario from a lower division.

Having said that though, it means Leeds can make a glorious return even though they're playing 3rd div. (H)

The best format UEFA ever had was with 3 cups. The cups winner cup should have it's own trophy.

EDIT:
and not exactly being destroyed there.
That is poor analogy man. The CL has the best of the world, it is not some crappy latin american team (Exclude Boca, River, Santos and a couple of other Brazilian teams). Add to that stadium conditions, tv deals, fan base. No one would be thrilled to se Barca play Rimini so to speak.

It would be nice to give the small clubs a chance at glory. I just think giving the Cup winner a place in the qualifying rounds should do the trick. A small club making the CL group stage would make a lot of money and chances are it could be stronger next year. That means more competition each season and some different stuff for us to watch. Not to mention there would still be big clubs in the CL and at the end of the day, those clubs would still be reaching the final stages anyway.
