Is Messi the next?!!......

Well, its something special with those Argies. Every potential star is called the new maradona, the next thing. I name a few. Aimar, Saviola, Riquelme and now Messi. Especially Aimar and Saviola were potential legends. But Aimar is too injurey prone and Saviola was benched alot. Now it's Messi's turn. I have to admit that Messi has the biggest talent of all (well I think Aimar came VERY close) but he is still 20. His career got in full speed very early. That also happened with the others. They became fantastic players, but not the next .....! Maybe you can compare Messi's career to that of Michael Owen. The guy was a prodigy when he was young. His career even went faster than that of Messi. But now, injuries, just injuries. I have read the biography of Maradona and he said one thing about Michael Owen, he said: 'Michael is the only good thing that came out of the WC98, I really hope for this kid that injuries dont kill him.' Well they did :( I hope this doesnt happen to Messi though. He has (I think) more talent than all of them and if injuries dont hit him then he can become a legend. (He has to win a WC though ;))

Ah yes 1998, when the new Maradonna tag was being foisted upon Ariel Ortega - that happened didn't it!

Messi is a very talented footballer, like Cristiano Ronaldo, Rooney, Kaka, Robben and Fabregas etc. But there will never be another Pele, Best or Maradonna. People need to stop comparing these kids to legends of the past, and let them be themselves and forge their own paths in football. Maybe the old records will fall, but you can't replace the likes of Maradonna, Cryuff, Eusebio, Best, Pele in football folklore.

True, but about Ariel! The guy did it himself! I'v almost never seen someone who can dribble past players like he did! His problem was his love for alcohol ;)

Ariel was the best during the 90s...in Argentina with River and the National Team...

For me, el Burrito is a legend...he is in my sig, and he will be there a long time, hehe...

that's a damn good problem to have, man. Especially if one is as well off as Ortega is/was financially.

Messi is a future legend, considerin his age and how much better he can get is scary.

yeah and watching ronaldo before his injury this guy would have been 99.9% the best player ever. And im not even close to being a ronaldo fan.
If he doesnt have any injury problems he has the potential to become one the greatest ever.

Well Ronaldo is regarded as one of the best. And I agree with that! He came back from his injury and was superb! Thats something alot of players cant do.

Like I said before, I believe Both Ronaldo and Zidane are in the legend status to be named amongs the best to have ever played....why...well For many years Ronaldo was THE go to forward, the cluch man, he could pull performances out of his butt...and then what he did in Korea/Japan was amazing....He led Brazil to a world championship and a world final, plus Brazil to at least one Copa America and one confederations....He has left an undeletable legacy in football, like many greats before him

Zinedine Zidane....well need I say more? the man gave France a World, and European championship as well as took them to the world cup when they where in danger and later to the final game which they could have won easily.....oh lets not forget he was pure magic for Real Madrid, leading them to a UEFA Champions Cup....intercontinental, etc, etc....i could go on and on

Best does not belong in that group. Not even close.

How can anyone name Best but simply forget the likes of Di Stefano and Puskas is way beyond me.

indeed...I say, the top 20 list is very hard to make; mainly because people tend to confuse two things....popular with great....just because a player was popular doesnt necesarily mean he was great....I believe that is the case with a lot of today's superstars....For example Becks, nobody denies the man is popular and a very good player....however he is not a true great....and so on and on.... but if I had to go off the top of my head some of these names come to the fore, and dont blast me, my memory fails me and I cant remember all the people I really want to remember, in no particular order....

Pele
Maradona
Puskas
Garrincha
Zico
DiStefanno
Cruyff
Eusebio
Zidane
Ronaldo
Platini
Lev Yazniv
Beckembauer
Pasarella
Van Basten
Bobby Moore
Matheus
Hugo Sanchez
Batistuta

thanks guys, for the names I didnt include, please tell me more, and I will add them
that's it I'm burned out fellas:junior:

My list would DEFINITELY have Zico in it. And maybe Cannigia too. But Zico is IMO a must. What a player! And I also cant forget about Baggio ;) But there are many players. I cant make a list!

btw I think Cannigia (one of my favorites) was more popular than great, same for Baggio, His name like the Brazilian Ademir, was forever tainted for messing up in a world cup final. Ademir was the top scorer in Brazil 1950 but after the Maracanazo he was sent away to rot, Brazil has always tried to erase the memory of that final.
