By the way, as far as I can remember, we got thrashed 3-0 at home by a team which had most of its players emerging from the youth team.

Do you even watch the new or read the paper.
It because
1. not as good from a young age. due to watching tv, ps2,xbox you name it.
2. off the pitch antics, Alcohol and partying.
3. 1 st world countries people work harder to get what they want.(which in this case is football and playing for a top team).
4. English people have more sports to go to,e.g tennis, football league, cricket and so on, than African players so more chances of better players.

The list could go on, but i will stop here.
