Cannavaro Wins Golden Ball!

Fabio Cannavaro has won the Golden Ball, this according to a Goal.com insider.



zoom - galleria Fabio Cannavaro, whose official web site is powered by Goal.com, will be named the winner of the Golden Ball (Ballon d'Or) as Europe's top footballer. The announcement will be made official on November 27.

The Real Madrid defender took the world by storm over the summer at the World Cup, where he led a staunch Italian defense that was the backbone to Italy's World Cup triumph in Germany.

Thierry Henry had emerged as an early frontrunner for the honor during the tabulation of journalists' votes, per a Goal.com report last week, but Cannavaro, who played last season with Juventus, overtook the Frenchman, who finished third, and Azzurri and former Juve teammate Gianluigi Buffon, who finished second, for the honor. Barcelona's Ronaldinho won the award last year.

By winning the award, Cannavaro becomes the first Italian to be so honored since Roberto Baggio won it 1993.

In addition to Cannavaro and Baggio, three other Italians have won the Ballon d'Or: Omar Sivori (1961), Gianni Rivera (1969), and Paolo Rossi (1982).

Too bad for Gigi :( I guess his loyalty to stay in Serie B killed him to win such an award, especially as a goalkeeper... But kudos to Cannavaro (Y) Winning it as a defender with guys like Henry and Ronaldinho around is hell of an accomplishment.

He trully deserves it, but other defenders like Maldini, Baresi or Hierro should have been awarded too.

IMO any player should be awarded with the golden ball only once. That's enough recognition, and would allow a wider variety of players that deserve this prize to receive it.

i dont think henry deserves it more then, etoo cannavaro toni etc etc, yeh he made it to the final of the world cup but did he really play that well in the wc? and the champions league again didnt play the great there eather, excpt for the goal he scored against real madrid(which i like to see him score against us now) he didnt do anything that great by his standards anyway.

i think cannavaro probably deserves it but marginaly.
