oh and btw, if Ahn was kicked out of Italy for scoring againts the Italians, Lucas Neil has been linked with a move to Milan (H)

Sadly, he is exactly right. Everyone dives. Everyone. Not a team on the face of the earth is innocent, except for a few with only domestic players in Scotland's championship.

I only dove once in my life, and it was to earn a penalty. A long ball got played ahead to me in the box, and I was surrounded by these two guys, both bigger than me, and wasn't going to get the ball, so I went down like I got shot. The woman ref bought it, we scored, and we went on to draw 1-1 against a team that was A LOT better than us. Right after I got it I was smiling so wide and even before the penalty got taken I was yelling over to my coach "Hey Andy, you like that!"

I'm just saying, it's strategy. Don't blame the player, blame the ref.

Lucas Neil is Barcelona bound, everyone knows that.

Good, hard-fought win by Italy. The questionable penalty made up for the even more questionable red card.

Australia can be proud of what they showed in this tournament.

italy fought well after that questionable red card, i think he was already on a yellow when he got the straight red, maybe another yellow would have been more reasonable, but then again i think the penalty was definitely not a penalty, even if we were to lose i would have prefered another way, poor lucas neil, he was by far australia's best player for the world cup and giving away that penalty just made him look so much worse than he is

It's sad that such a high profile sport like Football has such a poor
standard of refereeing. Compare the quality of referees in Football
against Rugby (union & league) referees and there's a huge gap.
Being Football is the biggest sport in the world, you would naturally
think the quality would be second to none, but it's far from that.

FIFA need to pull their finger out of their ass, because right through
this World Cup there's been many highly questionable decisions...
For example, in the SUI 'Vs UKR match, there were atleast 5 hand-balls
that the referee did nothing about, if this happened in another sport that
doesn't allow hand-balls (such as Hockey), the referee would have been
right on top of it and hand out the necessary penalty.

Football may be the greatest sport (i think it is), but it has a long way to go
to reach the professionalism of refereeing that's displayed in other major sports.
At the moment even crap sports like Netball have a better standard.

We lost to a bull**** penalty off a dive, but in the end that just balanced out the rubbish red card that Materazzi was given.

We had more posession in the first half, we had even more posession after the send off. BUT WE DID NOTHING WITH ALL THAT BALL. Viduka was rubbish (TAKE A SHOT ONCE PLEASE, YOURE A ******* STRIKER) and Sterjovski and Culina on the right achieved a total of **** all despite half of the whole game probably being in their corner on that side.

And how it didn't occur to ANYONE that our only chances, without exception, came from crosses and not through the middle is beyond me. Where were the crosses in the second half? Why wasn't Joshua Kennedy ever brought on? How the hell did Wilkshire and Sterjovski play so long? Why was Aloisi brought on so late? I appreciate what Guus did for us, but today we just had no ideas going forward and it really cost us.

Oh well, this has still been an amazing achievement for Australian football and hopefully its just the first step towards bigger and better things.

Bring on WC2010 :bob:

I hope after this "penalty" the whinging about how Italy is always geting ripped off at recent WCs by bad refereeing will finally stop. This should even the score. Overall, however, they were the better team and deserved it. I just wish it would have been a little more convincing.

By the way, I don't think that's a crap penalty. Did Grosso make is a little more dramatic than it really was, sure, but that's definitely a penalty. I would have called it 99 times out of 100.

i like how you manipulated my post to try and make your point. you should be a journalist in europe, you have talent. in my post, i was not defending diving, i was simply saying that in the reality that is soccer, diving is a big part of it.

the fact that this came from a portugeuse, a nationality that has no credibility when it comes to diving, (same goes for italy), is beyond me.

i know alot of portugeuse guys, and they are great guys that i joke around with when it comes to soccer, but its the portugeuse guys like you, that make me go around in a pick-up truck, with 5 gives in the cab, waving our italian flags with whistles and music, driving down the portugeuse avenue in town and do it with a big smile on my face.

I have the awful feeling that simulation will never get weeded out of this game. Its only going to get worse and worse. Referees should just stop calling fouls on chronic abusers. Then when scumbags like Materazzi and Essien hack their legs off, they will learn soon enough

owned.

Got to love the people who try to sound intelligent and say, "Oh, had it not been called, everyone would be crying penalty!" or "Italy deserved to win the game anyway!"

I know this is your first experience with soccer for alot of you guys, but just because a team is outplaying the other doesn't mean they get awarded penalties for it. Grosso did well, beat the Aussie and probably could have kept going to goal and scored or set up a tap-in goal. Instead, in typical fashion, remembers that the referees have been giving a penalty for every dive, so just goes out of his own way to fall over the defender. Bravo. Italy has now benefitted from game-changing calls and non-calls in their game against Ghana, the US, and now Australia. At some point, the logical thinking person would be like, "okay, Italy has gotten really lucky with refereeing, but it will come around." However, I don't think we have seen the last of some favoring by the officials.
You know, football is a funny game and things tend to even themselves out. Actually, I wouldnt know because this is my first experience with foot-er, soccer.

But lost in this accusation of favoritism, in some grand scheme to help the Italians out is the strange omission of the fact that prior to the game changing decisions in two of those three matches, there was a game changing decision that swung against the Italians and that in only one of those incidences was the decision correct. Is this merely done to heighten the tension of this scripted World Cup? So that Italy's ultimate triumph in the final seems all that more dramatic? Is this to cheer Italians up after Moggigate? Is it because they felt really bad for South Korea four years ago?

Despite what you probably think, im not picking on you personally. And dont mistake my civility for sarcasm or anything, because despite my disagreeing with you on the other thread, you seem like an intelligent poster. Im just responding like this in a general fashion becasue some of the Italian haters on this thread have lost their minds. I dont even like Italy (hate Totti, Materazzi, DeRossi) and Im here defending them. Is the officiating incompotent? Absolutely. Is it conspiratorial? No. This isnt the NBA

By the way, why was Toni taken off for Inzaghi? To me he was the best offensive threat Italy had in the first half and yet he gets yanked 20 minutes before Del Piero
