I just saw the penalty play (didn't catch the game) and I must say that it definitely didn't look like a penalty to me. The australian player tried to tackle him but didn't even touch him and Grosso threw himself over him when he saw the australian player laying in the ground in front of him.

We did our nation and the growth of football in Australia a huge service with our performance at this World Cup, we showed that we are not cowed, and can match champions like Brazil and Italy and in contrast to Australia not 2 years ago the improvement is super human.
Well done Australia, the loss is heartbreaking but the achievement in Germany is inspirational

that is exactly what happened. The penalty shouldnt have been awarded, but it was an understandable mistake and a bit of good fortune for a team who was down a player thanks to an awful awful call.Virgo said:

Yes Materazzi's send off was a very bad call on the part of the ref, but nevertheless no one can doubt that it actually was a FOUL, he slid in with a 2-footed tackle and took out not only Bresciano but his own defender aswell. Still it deserved a yellow card at most.
With the penalty, Lucas Neill committed to the tackle way too early, and totally missed Fabio Grosso and the ball, then when he saw that Grosso was still coming towards him he turned his body AWAY from the Italian and tried to SHIELD himself from the imminent collision.
Materazzi's red card = Aggression + harsh red card
Lucas Neill Penalty = NO Agression + Australia getting f*cked over
Even the Spanish press is already all over their referee calling him a disgrace.
Its a real shame that non-footballing countries like Australia and the USA where many people are still being introduced to the sport get to witness this kind of poor refereeing displays. What kind of impression should they take of the game?

I won't comment on what as been said here but I understand some Australians here being pissed. 11 vs 11 I thought Italy were the better team. They created more chances but Toni and cie didn't do the job. Materazzi's fould was at MAX a yellow but his rep id sh*t so he got a freakin' red and put Italy in serious sh*t. Italy didn't attackYou can't start attacking like crazy when you're a man down. You need to defend and hope for a break. PK was a pk if you're Italian and not if you're Australian or hate Italy. Grosso helped the ref to take that decision.
