Ideal position for a captain ?

I would do someone in Midfield but thats just me.

At any level though, I think people shy away from giving a keeper the captaincy.

Good question!
Its a difficult one though, i would say that history would suggest that successfull captains have been central midfielders. They can get back and forward, motivate all sections of the side and influence the game in all areas of the park.

If I'm not mistaken Beckenbauer was a LB or a RB.

David Beckham - RM - England
Ryan Giggs - LM - captained Man Utd many times
Gary Neville - RB - Man Utd
...

It's not vital to play in the centre, but it deffo helps.

To change the topic a bit....do u guys think that football is becomin more of a talisman sport ? I mean there is one guy who is the heart of a team : Henry,Gerrard, Rooney, Zidane, Ronaldinho ....is it becomin a one man sport to an extent ?

Center midfield or Center Back. I can't decide which one. Probably the Center Mid because I would rather have the Goalkeeper organizing the backline than the center back, and plus the center mid is all over the field winning balls, making plays, and setting an example.

No. That's the stupidest question I've ever heard.

Because any one player can be marked out of the game. I hear Dinho was basically invisible in the first half today. Lampard doesn't play both ways, and there are flaws with every player ever. One player not only can't win a game for you, but one player can't even turn a bad team into a competitive team. The field in soccer is enormous and the ball can be in any position at anytime. No player can dribble through an entire team, no matter how good they are, we get amazed when players skin 3 guys on their way to goal, but that's not single handedly doing anything, his team set that up and his team is the reason that one player isn't surrounded by 10 guys. Soccer is such a complex and huge game, that to suggest it is becomming a one man sport is stupid and ridiculous. There are stars, but there isn't anyone who is a "talisman".

in my humble opinion, the captain's position is not really that important but definitely not the keeper because the captain has to speak to the ref often during the game especially when ref decisions are getting not so conducive to his team. well unless the keeper can really get the ref to go to his posts when he shouts "hey ref... get your butt here!"

the captain should have played at least a few years for the club and has a strong character.

Nah, I don't think talking to refs during the run of play is important to a captain. A captain should lead by example, and play as hard as he can, not run his mouth and cry to the refs. Kahn has been a pretty solid captain from between the sticks.

It doesn't matter which position he plays... a captain is a leader and it's about personality not about the position..
The player could be anything, it doesn't matter.. his leadership qualities are what matters. That's why there are so many different positions for captains, and none of the positions is ideal, it's the player's personality that makes the difference.. for example:
Kahn as GK captain, Vieira as midfield captain, Del Piero\Totti as attacking captains...

well, like almost everyone here I think that the position is the least important thing to look for in a captain, though if it was down to it, I'd stick to a DC or a DM... The "talk to the ref" argument is not as important in Europe as it is in S. Am.

Usually, around here the captain is the most respected player, so you get Tevez as captain for Corinthians even though he can't speak a word in portuguese (ok, maybe he can, but I still can't understand a word of what he says...)

Well then again, Rooney is from England but nobody understands a word he says.
