Bribery? No problem, just don't let it influence the game.

LAGOS, Nigeria (Reuters) -- Football referees in Nigeria can take bribes from clubs but should not allow them to influence their decisions on the pitch, a football official said on Friday.

Fanny Amun, acting Secretary-General of the Nigerian Football Association, said bribery was common in the Nigerian game.

"We know match officials are offered money or anything to influence matches and they can accept it," Amun told Reuters on Friday.

Amun first made the statement earlier in the week to a football -- or soccer -- seminar in the capital Abuja, prompting protests from other officials.

"Referees should only pretend to fall for the bait, but make sure the result doesn't favor those offering the bribe," Amun said.

At the seminar, Nigerian football league chairman Oyuiki Obaseki reprimanded referees for poor quality match reports, saying that bribery was to blame.

"The quality of your reports have not done our league any good, so please desist from corrupt practices," he told delegates.

Despite a high-profile campaign to stamp out graft in the impoverished African country, Nigeria consistently ranks among the most corrupt countries in the world -- and football is no exception.

Is that just retarded or what?

I mean their idea is to stop bribery by saying that referees should accept money which is supposed to corrupt them, and then just not influence the game but keep the cash like if nothing happened?

Wouldn't it be easier for refs to simply say no to corruption, and simply not influence the game, with no money involved at all?
Or are they expecting to be paid to not influence the game? :|

Plus, who would be dumb enough to still try to bribe a ref there after reading about this :drevil: plan :drevil:?

F'ck, that's so weird that I'm by now thinking that I may have missed the point of the whole thing :gavin:

I don't think it's retarded, basically they're saying "let them pay you, and act like you didn't get anything". Once the bribers get to think it's not working, they'll stop... unless they like losing money like that...

will that work? I have no idea...

Here's why this tactic doesn't work:

a) lets pretend ref. A gets a bribe from club X to help them win against club Y. When X plays Y there's a tough tackle inside Y's box, and the ref - in his all honesty - calls it a penalty, but on the replay it was obvious the defender only played the ball. Now everybody will say bribery on refs still goes on to full efect, and who honestly can say it doesn't? Any dubious decision will always be infected by suspicion.
And, finally, the square root of X is A-B.

:

they will bribe the referee to favour a team, when they actually need the opponent to win.

When I become a ref, i'll take bribes but just play the game normally. I play fair but get a bonus!

As a Nigerian, i must hastily appologise for Fanny Amun (the FA official in question) Since he burt into the Nigerian Soccer Scene as the coach of the WYC winning team in Japan 93. Fanny has been known as a criminal. If you ask any person who knows Nigerian football about Fanny, they will tell you he is a well renouned thief. the man has specialised in collecting bribes from coaches and players. He has also formed a powerful click that has strongly backed his ambitions to rule Nigerian football.

Well, thank God for this well publisized disgraceful comments. i can confirm that there are plans to unsit him and even his click members are so ashamed to show their faces in public.

I want to once again appologise on behalf of my fellow Nigerians. If exile fits this crime, i suggest that Fanny should be exiled. The criminal is not one of us!
