With all due respect pal, you should care about us being in the Champions League next season as it's worth about 15 million quid to the club just for being in it, regardless of how far we may advance. It will also be more difficult to attract top players without the lure of playing in the competition IMO.

As for the winners of the competition not getting an automatic berth for the following season, well I think that's a pretty odd call and inconsistant with many other major competitions. I guess it'll just have to be the domestic treble next year then. Bummer. :(

I think part of the blame that you guys aren't fourth have to fall on the shoulders of the players. What's good is a tournament without its champion?

Yep, 4th spot's well and truly gone. Well, I hope that the bluesh*te enjoy it, cause come next season it'll be business as usual again across the park and they'll be back to mid-table.

yes.. but we don't deserved to be in it.. our league form is just suck like hell this season, everton played like **** in the second part of the EPL but we played even worst so if we can't get in then let it be, but if we could get in through the side door i would take it, but if UEFA doesn't give an extra slot for us, i'm ok with that as well..

There is/was a glimer of hope if you won the CL because of what the FA published last season:

FA denies Euro rule change claims

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/europe/4522235.stm

The Football Association insists there has been no change in its Champions League qualification policy.

The FA has decided the Premiership's top four will qualify for next season's Champions League, even if Liverpool win this year's final and finish fifth.

But a story on the FA website last year stated if an English team won the competition the fourth-placed league side would enter the Uefa Cup.

"This was not formal policy agreed by the FA Board," said an FA insider.

Chelsea beat Arsenal in last year's Champions League quarter-finals before being knocked out at the semi-final stage.

The source, speaking after last year's website story resurfaced, added: "The FA website was simply publishing an interpretation of guidelines published by Uefa.

"This should not be confused with the issues of qualification for next season's Champions League.

"Due to the ambiguity of Uefa's regulations the FA sought clarification from Uefa, who clearly wanted the FA to make a decision.

"This was debated formally by the FA board twice and the Professional Game Board to establish the clear policy which was announced on Thursday."

The FA has said it will lobby Uefa for an extra place should Liverpool win the Champions League final against AC Milan on 25 May but fail to finish in the Premiership's top four.

The Reds are currently fifth and three points behind Merseyside rivals Everton while sixth-placed Bolton also have a chance of claiming the final Champions League qualification slot.

But Everton are favourites to finish fourth as they have three games left to play with the Reds and Bolton having two to go.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has joined the race to sign Real Betis star Joaquin and hopes to persuade the player to snub Real Madrid and Chelsea.

The Anfield manager is keen to add to his Spanish contingency and Betis president Manuel Ruiz de Lopera says that he has now come in for Joaquin.

The Spanish international winger has been the subject of interest from Chelsea throughout the season and the Andalucian club were reported to have turned down a substantial offer from The Blues in January.

The player himself has always stated his desire to join Real Madrid, the club he supports, and it is well known that Florentino Perez is a fan of his.

But Benitez has made his admiration of Joaquin clear and Lopera says that he is already expecting an offer from the Premiership club in the summer.

"There is an English club, with a great Spanish coach. He has just taken his team to the final of the Champions League and knows our market very well and he wants to ensure that Joaquin does not go to Chelsea or Madrid," Lopera revealed.

"It is not always possible to turn down offers and here at Betis we are not going to say that he is not for sale and then go and sell him."

Benitez already has a host of Spaniards at the club but Joaquin is a more recognised name and is hot property in Europe, although The Reds may find it hard to match the financial muscle of real and Chelsea should a bidding war ensue.

As we know Chelsea are also interested in Joaquin and in another article on the site i have taken an exert from it to paste;

However, the same cannot be said for Joaquin who does not seem over keen on linking up with Mourinho.

The Spanish star is seen by Mourinho as the ideal man for his right sided winger role, but Joaquin seems in little hurry to leave Seville.

Mourinho is reported to have travelled to Spain in recent weeks to confirm Chelsea would be willing to pay up to €40 million for Joaquin and while Real Betis supremo Manuel Ruiz de Lopera was prepared to listen - the player wasn't.

congrats Liverpool to making the CL final (Y) i hope you win, Gerrard and Riise are two of my favourite players.

anyways.... i'd like to know what you 'pool fans think of Celtic stealing 'YNWA' and using it as their anthem? they often sing it, here's a clip

edit: forgot to mention, did you hear the commentator after say the celtic fans in their "unique" way payed tribute? unique my ass

I have also heard some other fans sing YNWA and I think it was in a Bundesliga match-even in Greece, about a decade ago,AEK fans sang a version of the song-the music and rythm was the same, but was sang in greek as an applause to the AEK team. It's the most famous and greatest song in European football scene and, although I don't like "copies",I can't blame other fans. After all, there's only one and original YNWA and this is sang only in Anfield.

I don't think it makes sense to leave CL winners out of next year's competition for the sake of a team that came 4th in their league-and I'm talking about ANY CL winner and ANY or 4th team in ANY league. After all, in previous years, a Champions' Cup or CL Winner were ALWAYS given automatic qualification for the next competition and this of course had nothing to do with their final league position. If it is still called Champion's League, at least Champions should take part in it-whether Champions in their country or Champions of Europe.
