I had a dream I was at the 2005 E3, and a secret wall, opened up, revealing a back room with a stage, and open seats down front.
I made my way down front, and the curtains on the stage opened to reveal a giant 45 foot screen.
Old projector sounds could be heard, but the picture was like digital cinema.
Across the screen came three, no four, logos...
EA Sports...at this point, I started to get up.
SIGAMES...at this point I sat back down again, thinking, did EA buy them? Oh no!
KONAMI (KCET)...At this point, I'm just wondering, what the hell is going on???
Then the final logo, one I - we - have never seen before...
FIFA Evolution 2006: Total Football Management.
Then the CEOs of each of the three companies came out to describe this unique project, a one-time deal, where all three companies would come together to produce a timeless, classic football immersion experience, with the mod community in mind.
They showed in-game movies of all the FIFA licenses, with near-perfected WE gameplay, pulled off of CM stats, with EA marketing and distribution, and so many modes of play, and fusions of modes of play (like CM, but you can choose to play each match, or jump into matches, etc.), that I cried.
The game creators came out and said, "this is the one time that we'll build a game that, if you buy it, you'll never HAVE to buy a game again...this is the total framework, aand we're not afraid to do it, because we find it the ultimate challenge to build upon this, and find it the ultimate challenge to figure out how to make follow-ups to this masterpices that are even better."
I looked left, and right, and all the webmasters from all the gmaing sites were there, and they were crying...I was crying...it was pathetic really.
There was no intent to make, a la EA, two different games in one World Cup year. This game had - among its fifteen to twenty different modes - a full WC qualifying mode, with all the 2006 stadia for Germany in that mode.
The game's number one effort was to create a database framework to include EVERY nation, and EVERY league, on earth. If you wanted to, you could just play the Cayman Islands Foster's National League, for example. I mean, everything was there, with no exceptions. The creators talked about exhibiting as much love for Turks and Caicos as they did for Italy; as much care went into the framework of the Montserrat national stadium as it did into the new Munich one.
Total, perfect commitment, and this game, this simulation, this...complete immersion, was reflective of that.
The game was a DVD-ROM, three in fact, and cost £100, but I was no question willing to purchase it.
204 FIFA associations. All their leagues, all their players. And to leave enough flexibility that mods could fill in the gaps, but the framework was there, and expandible, with the ability to slot in competitions as they were created (or remove ones as they wet away, like the World Club champ. etc.), in "real-time."
I woke up, and wished I could go back to sleep.
Imagine, those companies coming together to give us the fullest immersion, for all the right reasons...
Yeah, it could only BE a dream...but what a dream!!!
FIFA Evolution 2006: Total Football Management. In essence, its the experience we deserve.
Now, to try and go back to sleep...RIGHT NOW...
