Basically, I find when I use the Magic Wand, I can only highlight the background, and when I delete that, insteed of a transparent background, I get a plain blue one, can anybody help?

What program are you using?

As a general rule you should never use the magic wand to extract people from images as the cut is not clean or precise enough. It may be time for you to look at other ways of cropping but it depends very much on which program you are using to what you should do.

I use Photoshop CS, and I am very much a newbie to graphics of any kind

But using the lasso seems to get me even worse results, that take forever to to

You're getting a blue bg because when you are opening a new window you are not setting it so that it can be trasnparent.

Pen tool :mrpimp:

If you have patience with it, you can be a lot more accurate around edges and get the nice, smooth curves done really easily. Don't use the magic wand tool, it's too inaccurate for what you are attempting to do. The magnetic lasso can be frustrating too, as it doesn't cling to just where you want to. You can use the eraser if you want, it gets the job done, but the pen tool is the way to go

Wow, thanks for all the responses

Well, my friend said that Magnetic Lasso was the way to go, but people may be harder to do (Henry wearing an Arsenal Shirt wouldn't pick up Henry due to him being a different colour to the shirt.

So, I'll try the pen, thanks, hopefully you'll see some of my sigs in the future :D

I personally wouldn't use the magnetic lasso tool although it is by far better than the magic wand. I've never tried using the pen tool so I can't really comment on that. I nearly always use the polygonal lasso tool which is good as long as you put in a lot of points and easy to use. I also occasionally use the extract tool which also gives good results.

The pen tool takes a bit of fiddling, but once you get it working for you, it helps in so many ways. You can use it for cropping, plus filling areas, stroking along a line, etc. :)

You can also use Quick Mask to select people or use Colour Range tool. I defenitely do not recommend magic wand, magnetic lasso tool or the normal lasso tool.

ive only tried using the pen tool on my last few sigs and i have to say it is alot better...you get it much closer to the person and it makes your cutting look much better
