No Euro 2004 For Maldini

05/16/2004. Milan defender Paolo Maldini will not be coming out of international retirement for Euro 2004.

"There won't be any European championship for me," he told Italy's Sky Sport.

"I have spoken to Trapattoni recently and I explained to him the reasons for my choice and he understood my motives."

Trapatoni will release which players he plans to take to Portugal for EURO 2004 tomorow. The definite list will be released June 2. 22 of the players are practically chosen already. The spot for the last attacker is still open with Filippo Inzaghi still uncertain about his ankle injury. The inclusion of Parma striker Alberto Gilardino is speculated if "Super Pippo" is not fit to take place in the tournament, though Trap has said that he will most likely be left for the Euro under-21. If Inzaghi is not chosen Gilardino would stil have to compete for a spot with Marco Di Vaio or Ambrosini. The final list will be made June 2nd but look to Italy's May 30 friendly with Tunisia to show the most likely starting lineup.

this leaves 1 spot that i really cant think of, i dont know whether trap will go with another outside back or add another attacker

i wouldnt include ambrosini, but trap likes him and he is a good 2nd option for the holding midfield position

and i would rather include gilardino but we know forsure he will not be included as he has not featured in a friendly and gentile has called him for the under21 friendly

and if trap does go with an outside back will he go with birindelli, zauri, favalli???

where's camoranesi in your list? he's a guarantee

ummm how has camoranesi guaranteed a spot, what has he done for juve, hell he hasnt even been in the friendly squads, nervo has been there, he has been a mediocre player since he turned nationality

he cant guarantee a spot at juve why should he be going to portugal

camoranesi would be a waste of a spot

totti hasn't played in the friendly games lately either, but camo's been injured for some time i hear, that's why he hasn't been playing

well then im guessing he is not in top form, so another reason why i wouldnt take him

and we both know that totti was not in the line-up due to minor injuries, if he wasnt injured we know he would have been in the squad, can you say the same for camoranesi, bad comparison

i see gattuso as more of a guarantee than camoranesi, because he is a great 2nd option for the holding midfield position and i would bet that camo wouldnt get playing time in a position where we have the most talented depth

but i do agree with peruzzi, he could make it, but i doubt he will go as a 3rd

do you actually see pippo going even though he has been injured for who knows how long and wont be in top form, he said himself he wont go unless he is 100% and i dont think hes there since he hasnt played a game in some time

that's not a bad comparison, totti hasn't played becuase roma was still in the scudetto race, same with cassano, but camo has been called up for every game that he's been healthy, why would he be dropped all of a sudden

most depth? italy has been struggling for a RM, that's why we got an argentine to fill in

i would say pippo instead of legrottaglie because legro has had a bad year, and pippo pretty much deserves the spot after what he did in qualifying
