Nah, it's pretty stanrdad in mainland clubs to have a director of football whose in charge of transfers, and he coordinates with the manager. AVB's job is deal with the first team squad and get us trophies, he's not the one whose going to be scouting and asking for young players who may or may not be good enough in a few years' time. De Bruyne is not good enough yet, so AVB has no reason to want him. Once, if ever, he's good enough, AVB will use him.
I think you need communication between manager and director of football in order to see the best possible results, but I agree with the Continental method. As long as the manager lays out his style of play and the type of player he wants, it's better to have someone else going out to find the players. Even in England this isn't that strange, I remember in The Damned United movie Brian Clough had his assistant do that stuff.
Yeah but Brian Clough had Peter Taylor, basically his best friend, right-arm and arguably co-manager. That is unusual in British football.
Rafa, in one of a series of very good articles about the technical side of football management, outlines the differences between club structures in Britain and on the continent. http://www.rafabenitez.com/web/index...a=57&idioma=in
I would like to say British football stay that way. I mean, it is fine for the chairman and manager to work together in the transfer market a la Redknapp and Levy, but when the manager is bypassed entirely, I dont like it. Dont forget that having new unwanted and unasked for players thrust upon them by the board (Shevchenko and Torres) has already cost the jobs of two Chelsea managers.
The continent can keep their Perez style meddling, thank-you very much!
I'm not saying managers should do all the scouting themselves, but I do think the manager should be included in all transfer consultations and, ultimately, should have a transfer veto.
Lots about British football is antiquated and I like it that way!
He said that with the De Bruyne transfer he had absolutely no involvement whatsoever.
Anyway, amongst all the dull transfer let downs, we manage to hit another pathetic result. Was about to say 'are we ever gonna score from open play again?' when Bosingwa obliged, but the point remains - goals just arent coming from anywhere at the moment. And on a day when United and Tottenham won all too comfortably, could have done with a better result. If you look at where we've dropped points in the last couple of months - well - the games are gonna get much harder than this.
Also dont see the point of not playing Cahill, especially with Terry not about. Dont trust the pairing of Luiz and Ivanovic at all anymore.
I read about that story and it's not as emphatic as that headline leads you to believe..... basically a 'source' close to Mourinho has revealed he would like to go back to England, supposedly to whichever club would take him even if it's a less good club, and that he would be interested in a return to Chelsea 'among others'.
Also, apparently he only wants to go if he wins La Liga, he wants to win the league in the big three England, Italy and Spain, and then leave with a triumphant **** you to the Real fans.
Well... it's also what we were saying earlier, about the difference between English and Continental club structure and the resulting effect on managerial freedom....... I think Mourinho likes the English way....
Also, as much as he hated the English press, I think he found out that things are possibly even worse on the continent!

Hahaha, ohhhh yes. Bayern would probably be the absolute worst fit for Jose. Hoeness would be giving public comments questioning his ability after 2 weeks.
Well, the Utd game coming up in a few hours and I'm not confident at all for our chances. A draw wouldn't be a bad result considering that we've not been at our best for a while now.
News reports indicate that AVB is ready to put Cahill in for his debut. I guess that means he'll most likely partner Luiz in the center. Hopefully Luiz does better this time around against Utd.
Iva would probably move back to RB and I'm hoping for Bertrand to come in for Cole but AVB will probably shift Bosingwa there.
Lamps will probably start from the bench, so Meireles, Malouda and Romeu will make up the midfield judging from the last few games.
Hopefully AVB surprises us and goes for Essien and Meireles with Romeu instead of Malouda. Malouda cannot play in the LCM position, he's been woeful since he was brought on to replace Lamps in that position. I have no qualms with him at LW or LM but Mata occupies that area now.
Torres and Studge up front is a no brainer although Lukaku should be called up early if Torres has yet another off day.
Romeu and Chelsea speak 2 different languages, he keeps the position put the pause and pass short but the others ignore him and run, run, run and run. You should have signed Falcao, Torres can't play at 1 touch and find the space.
