Livorno midfielder Piermario Morosini dead after collapsing on the pitch

PESCARA, Italy — Hospital officials say Livorno midfielder Piermario Morosini has died after suffering cardiac arrest during a Serie B match at Pescara. He was 25.

Edoardo De Blasio, a cardiologist at Pescara's Santo Spirito hospital in Italy, confirmed the death Saturday. He says "unfortunately he was already dead when he arrived at hospital. He didn't regain consciousness."
Morosini, who was on loan from Udinese, fell to the ground in the 31st minute of the match. A defibrillator was used on the player.

The match was called off and some players left the field in tears.

Sad to see this kind of things happen more and more frequently on football pitches. R.I.P!

So sad. RIP

Wish I hadn't seen the video, the way he reacted was so tragic. Poor fella.

Are the physios in football games even trained to do stuffs like CPR?! I think all of them should be trained to deal with cardiac arrests. You can train people about basic cardiac support (BLS) in a few days.

Sad to see this happen once again. RIP.

You have to be trained in all basic life-saving protocols in any healthcare profession, but on-field physios/athletic therapists get more advanced "first response" training rather than just CPR/first-aid. I've gone through all the training numerous times, but believe me, sometimes it's simply out of your hands no matter how hard you try to resuscitate someone

RIP, another player in his early-mid 20s gone. Absolutely gut wrenching.

Have you read of his unlucky life?
He had a dramatic, intense life.
Within three years, when he was but a teenager, he lost his parents and his elder brother, invalid, who committed suicide. He remained alone with his sister, seriously ill. But despite this cruel fate, he decided not to surrender but to become a professional footballer: “That is what my parents would have liked me to become” he said admitting that “certain events really change you”.

I didn’t know him personally but who was close to him (he was born in my same town - Bergamo - and was of my generation) says he was a brilliant guy: despite all that he had passed through, all he had to suffer, he was always smiling and, when not away with his team, helping children and learning them football in a parish.

Before being a footballer he was a Man. It’s men like him who now-days football needs.

R.I.P. Piermario ora sei ritornato a casa, tra le stelle.

You don't need to be in healthcare to be able to do BLS/CPR. Anyone can be trained for CPR. I know many non-medical people who did the course. CPR is very easy as well. You just need to check for pulse and if there is no pulse, start chest compressions/breaths until paramedics come. This can save many lives. Most of deaths happening on the pitch are because of cardiac arrest.

RIP anyway.

Are these incidents becoming more frequent, or is it just that we are paying more attention now?

Honest truth? More frequency. As we've all noticed, sports have changed dramatically in the last decade even. Players have to be stronger, faster, and fitter to have a chance of competing. To achieve this, they're being forced to train harder and for more hours and generally push their bodies past their limits. They might appear to be able to handle the load, and many can, but over time that stress builds up and for a select few players, the body just gives out at a certain point. Add to that steroid use and blood doping, which are hell on the cardiovascular system long term, and you have a perfect brew for this kind of situation. Bottom line: it's all about the spectacle and the profit. Player well-being, while important, is a secondary concern.

Terrible, RIP

And class act by Di Natale, he takes guardianship of Morosini's ill sister. Morosini lost both his parents before turning 18 and his disabled brother committed suicide...

RIP.

Wow, his sister hasn't had it easy. Parents gone, and now both brothers gone. Classy Di Natale.
