I would prefer him to stay but I won't be devastated if we lose him. I will be absolutely furious if we sell him for less than we paid, however.

Matic clearly has the talent. I would rather keep him and see if Conte can get him working again.

I don't see why Mikel is so hated. He has done a good job for a long time, 10 years now. We expected him to be a world-beater and he hasn't become that but he was dependable and never complained about being a bench player. As a bench player he was very good. He was a great DM who kept possession but played the ball too slowly to truly be effective against smaller sides. He never scored but he was never expected or asked to score and rarely put in a position to do so. I wouldn't mind seeing him go but having him around doesn't seem to be a bad idea either.

Of course, but he is closer to the goal by 50 metres compared to the goalkeeper. It is always a plus to have midfielders to score goals because forwards cannot score in all games.

So Schmeichel scored a fluke goal, big deal. Using it for any statistical point is an exercise in futility.

1 goal in 247 games is 0.4 % which is negligible. Close to 0 goals. He is not responsible to score goals but it is strange for a non-GK player to have scored just 1 goal in 10 seasons.

What are you arguing? He did not score goals, he was not expected to score goals. End of. You don't criticise someone for not doing something that they're not expected to do.

the best DMs actively avoid scoring goals by getting rid of the ball quick and making sure they don't stray out of position

When did I criticize him? It was just a comment. I said nothing against him.

Mikel V/s Schmeichel is just a comparison. I am not saying this makes him a bad player.

Mikel has consistently failed to lock down a place in the Chelsea starting eleven and make that DM spot his own despite so, so many opportunities to do so - he is not without qualities but we are a team that needs to be constantly upgrading our quality threshold and by those standards he needs to be moved on.

Considering that there are hints that Kante and Matic might be the starting duo, keeping Mikel as cover would be wise.

Meh, sell him and play the youngsters. Ginkel, Pasalic and Loftus Cheek are ready.

Loftus-Cheek is shite in that constrained position though - for a long time that was the only place I saw him play and I couldn't understand the hype around him (I assumed we were just so desperate to have an academy product work out that we were all lying to ourselves) but then hiddinck moved him further up the pitch and he was much better and I discovered that that had previously been his preferred position. If we try to use him as simply DM cover he will drift into obscurity.

But there is just no point using wages and a squad space on Mikel, really, every time he comes on it's just frustrating. Like I said if we want to get anywhere we need to be upgrading constantly and that goes for our squad players too. If azrael was in charge we would never sell anyone. A willingness to 'settle for what we have' contributed to last seasons collapse.

Improving the squad is great, but sometimes you need to recognise that you can't have 3 top players for one position. You need players who are good enough to play specialised roles but who will accept a reduced role. That is Mikel. If Matic became a bench player (and didn't bitch about it) then we should sell Mikel. Otherwise it's a stupid proposition. Someone needs to play that role and a top player won't accept that role. A lesser player will cost more money and will need to adjust when Mikel is perfectly capable. We can sell our specialists when we have a deeper squad, not right now.
