No. They're getting closer though. But they're out of Southern states (save West Virginia) and that's where Clinton and Trump have been strongest. Bernie is strongest along the Great Lakes and in the Northeast while Cruz looks good in the western states.

Hillary is going to win her nomination regardless. The question is can Cruz force a contested convention.

Trump's use of the southern strategy and populist economic (anti-conservative) rhetoric exclusively, has upset most conservative intellectuals. Their base has been exposed as nothing more than racist rubes who only voted for their laissez fair policies because they coupled it with racism. Which pretty much everyone with a brain knew already, but not the GOP's intellectual wing apparently. They've spent 30 years convincing themselves that they won over blue collar white voters by eliminating the inheritance tax under Bush and removing restrictions on investment banks.

But I do find it funny that the GOP has sifted through all available candidates and come down to the most despised man in Washington (Cruz) and one of the most despised and mocked men in America (Trump).

Story I heard about Cruz: he lost $2000 in a dorm room poker game at Princeton, and instead of paying his debt he went down the hall and snitched out the illegal poker game to the RA.

That sounds like a joke from Chapelle's Player Haters Ball bit!

But with him I actually believe it.

The new conservative party thing is insane, there's no way they have time to get the infrastructure together, get ballot access (especially in high hurdle states like North Carolina and Texas which they'd absolutely need to win to have any chance), and get a party apparatus together. The fact that they keep blustering about it instead of just rallying behind Gary Johnson and the Libertarian Party -- a party which has all of those things -- for a year is mind-boggling. But then again, the Libertarians don't like taking people's rights away, so it makes sense that some of them would be adverse to them.

New conservative party would get about the Libertarian Party's share of votes. Fact is their base loves Trumpism.

I almost get the feeling we're coming up on the end of sixth party system anyway. There are some real fractures showing in both coalitions, the Republicans can no longer control the "alt right" and the Democrats are losing their grip on the Social Democrats because some feel like they're screwing Bernie (because they're screwing Bernie). Something's got to give eventually.

There may be some introspection of campaign funding and lobbying as a result of trump, however

The terror attack scenario actually scares the piss out of me because the populace would lurch right long enough to put him in the White House and that's a horrifying thought, especially considering how many of the Republican members of congress believe the same things he does and just hide it.

In my view a contested convention which nominated kasich or cruz (unless cruz comes spectacularly close to trump which he won't) would be akin to the Republican Party throwing the election to Hilary in order to prevent trump - and will be seen that way, with disastrous impact on the many voters who went trump because they think traditional politicians are cynical, bitter and sneaky

They aren't winning the White House anyway. Kasich is the only one of the three with a realistic shot and the mud they've thrown on him during the primary hurts him. Hillary is going to be President barring this scandal having some serious meat to it or a third party causing electoral chaos that throws the process to the (Republican) House. She's far from ideal, and most people really dislike her, but she's easier to stomach than Cruz or Trump.

I think parts of the Republican coalition (the conservatives, old Whigs, and Christian democrats, mainly -- the soft libertarians are going to vote LP this year because Johnson is a soft libertarian himself and Trump really pissed the Rand Paul fans off bad) are more worried about down ballot races than the Presidency. They want to maintain both federal houses and all of the state governments they currently control, if Trump kept moderates and those aforementioned groups from the polls the election could be a political disaster for them, especially considering congressional lines in several southern states will be redrawn in 2020 due to population changes and the state governments control that process.

I think the best thing the establishment gop can do is 'officially' back trump (assuming there is no cruz surge) but not actively campaign for him (he won't ask them to anyway) and wait for him to lose, hopefully taking a couple of other establishment enemies like (the new incarnaytion of) Christie and Palin down with him, and then be like 'see where whack job popularism gets us' and try to consolidate for 2020 - Hilary strikes me as having the potential to be a one-termer

She's a spectacularly weak candidate and only the GOP could find a way to fluff such an easy chance.
