Yeah, Silva as winger would be a no, too. You want him in the middle, whether by drifting in or as a number 10. Anyway, 2 MCs with defense duties is bad. Think about it, you have 6 players being cautious and staying back (support FBs will attack, but still), and your attack is disconnected. Change on MC to attack or support, at least.

Yeah, I normally had 5 players on attack and one as support, but for some reason I would give up some dumb ass goals from my CM getting caught up. Same with the defense before I switched to stopper/cover. I want to play attractive but I also don't want to concede, but I've been having trouble finding a medium.

In my 4-4-2 there is often only 3 players with attacking duties, 2 strikers and a winger. I score goals.

You can't have your attack with attacking duties and your midfield with defensive ones (defend, not support, support is fine) and expect good results, the gap will be too wide. In essence, you want to have a combination of attack, defend and support across all lines, so, for example: CBs on defend, FBs on attack, meaning they move in line with the midfield and even beyond, linking defense with midfield and even attack. 2 MCs, one on defend, staying back and linking with the defense, and 1 on support, moving around the middle 3 and linking midfield to everything. Above that, whether wingers, strikers, or attacking mids, they can all be attack, but that's if you're going to spend most of your time pegging the opposition back, otherwise, someone should get a support role to make sure there isn't a gap between midfield and attack. Basuically, you want to cover all the levels to make sure there's always passing angles and you can always transition quickly from one phase to the next. Having everyone defending, and 2 people attacking means you'll HAVE to long-ball it or the opposite is true too, your defenders will be caught isolated when defending.

The latest Tactical Frameworks and Theorems used this as an underlying philosophy in their tactical musings/advice.

I played against Man U, which made a bit nervous, but pulled it out.

I was happy, but that went away quick when I saw the round of 16 draw.

****. Not winning the group is gonna cost me.

I decided I wasn't done spending, so I went and tried to buy Gotze, but apparently he's out of reach even for Man City.

I got my consolation price, which will cover for Yaya since he's going to the CAN.

I'm already having buyer's remorse, though. Through two games he has been useless, and he says the language barrier will be a big deal. Not sure how long it'll take him to adapt, or if he even will at all.

So ******* Man U doesn't lose... and then they drew to Fulham, and I drew to Swansea. ******* frustrating game. I hit the post four times. FOUR TIMES! So I lost my chance to catch up. Man U plays Arsenal and Arsenal wins 2-1. I play Spurs and have a chance to cut into the lead... but I go down 2-0 and I'm getting dominated. Time to mail it in, right?

              Wrong.

              Yaya the beast strongly disagrees!

              Table as it stands now:

I might be out of the running still, but maybe this kind of win can spark something special... plus I still play Man U in a few weeks, so there's still hope.

Finished the season, but it was a bit of a letdown. I felt I did well, but Man U and Arsenal were winning every game in the last two months. Ended third. Ehhh... I guess CL qualification is decent.

These are the results of a chunk of the matches...

I notice you are not doing well on the road, my suggestion is if you do nothing else, play your mentality as standard instead of control away from home.

Yeah, I'll have to try that. I seem to concede quickly or struggle badly scoring on the road. Maybe I'm being too aggressive.

Anyway, in the offseason I ended up getting rid of Tevez (said he was unhappy despite requesting to be taken off the transfer list two times and me giving him plenty of first team chances and him being average at best), Bridge, Adebayor, Hargreaves and Kolo Toure.

                    Signings:

Mostly as a reinforcement, and he had a good season. Nasri tore his ACL in the first preseason game, so I was forced to buy someone quick. Di Maria was first choice, but Man U snapped him up before me.

To rotate with De Jong and maybe Yaya. A slight upgrade although I've always been a fan of Yaya, so he'll most likely be first choice unless he really stinks it up.

He was like number 5 in the "elite target striker I wanted" list... RVP wasn't interested, Cavani wasn't either, and Napoli didn't want to sell Willian. Depending how he does, he will be rotated with Aguero... and the odd man out barring injury is probably Dzeko since he's a bit one-dimensional.

                    And then the homer signing.

Also for depth. I'll try to play him whenever possible, which will most likely mean cup games and CL games, and a few games here and there if I decide to rest my starters.

Don't care for your signings, but I think you'll probably do a little better this season from experience. Surprised you didn't look to reinforce the defense though, your fullbacks aren't the best.

I had Rossi at Villarreal playing the secondary striker role and he had a good season. In 29 games he scored 21 (6 from penalties), 9 assists, 5 MOM and an average rating of 7.56. Lucas looks like a really great all-round CM and I would like to buy him in one of my games so tell me how he does, I would not pay that much for him tho.

I'm having a bit of bad luck with injuries so far. As mentioned before, Nasri was out a while. Now De Jong is out a while with a bruised ligament. Rossi is out a few weeks because of a dislocated shoulder, Silva barely got back and was injured his first game back. Balotelli is having back issues... on and on.

Anyway, I drew the group of death in the CL. FML.

And for some reason I lost the option to defer the press conferences to my assistant, so I've been giving them the Bill Belichick treatment.

Your Assistant's contract ended and you didn't sign another one. Can't assign assistant manager duties when you don't have one. Frankly, I don't see that group as so bad either.

So after a season and a half at Man City I was sacked, and Man City hired Villas-Boas... I did suck. I was like 4th in the PL, but I qualified to the round of 16 of the Champions League with ease. I beat Real Madrid twice which I thought was a big accomplishment.

I simmed to the end of the year and was picked up by Bolton. Their team was pretty ****ty, and made a few purchases... the most significant I can remember was Benayoun. Anyway, I lasted about 16 games because I was incredibly inconsistent. I would string 3 wins and lose like 5, then win another 3 and drop another 6. And so on... I was midtable, which I figured was decent, but I still got the boot.

I simmed again, but not even a month later Sunderland picked me up. They were dead last and only had 10 points through 20 games. I had to do a lot of catching up, which at times looked like it wasn't possible. I was able to catch up seemingly salvage the team from relegation... or so I thought. Then the last 6 games were brutal.

I lost to ManU 1-0, lost to Arsenal 3-2 (after being up 2-0), lost to Liverpool pretty badly and beat Leeds 2-0 and drew with Wolves 2-2 (after being up 2-0).

I was about 4 points clear and thinking I had a chance to actually had a chance to jump a few spots to be safer, but then out of nowhere Norwich beats ManU 1-0 and Bolton 2-1. They surpass me by one point and I have to play against Bolton, the team that sacked me earlier in the season.

Again!!! After being up 2-0 and thinking I just saved the team from relegation while at the same time getting redemption from beating the team that sacked me earlier, these mother****ers come back down 2 and steal my three valuable points. ****! To make matters worse, Leeds (the closest safe team to me) plays Chelsea, so I think I have a good chance. Wrong. They ******* won.

Frustrating. I really suck at this game.

I'm surprised you continued as Bolton and Sunderland. Those are ******* hard assignments man. Most of us who post in here have been playing this game for 10 years, you gotta ease into it a little bit. Not a bad showing in all honesty for your first game. I find that playing attacking football on the road, sometimes even if you are vastly superior as a team, is a recipe for a draw or loss. Don't park the bus, but go out with a "standard" mentality. Anyway, you weren't bad, and there are good teams in England; the weight of expectations on City are enormous.

If you just want to win, I suggest you pick a club that is dominant in its domestic league (Shakhtar, Bayern, Basel) and go from there. If you want a good squad without such demanding expectations, maybe try Fiorentina, Valencia, Schalke/Leverkusen. Just learn something from every game and you'll get better fast.

Oh, and for a beginner there's no shame in downloading tactics. And you might also want to lurk or post around at thedugout or the SI Games forum.
